RIP Robin Williams

Was thinking this was a troll with a lesser or unknown Williams. Grew up on this guy, from Mork through the Night at the Museum flicks that I love to watch with my oldest. He had Teddy Roosevelt fixation thanks to Williams' characterization.

This pretty sad. Seems his addictions were helping him cope with deeper issues.

Funniest guy of the 20th century or at least in the top five. I was always in the aisles when he was riffin...

The fact that you're able to state that so clearly and rationally is the part that just don't get. But as always, here for you and wishing you the best.

Chronic depression is largely within the brain's chemistry. We can't alter brain physiology very much other than me d's, and each person reacts differently. If that medicine is alcohol and drugs, scary changes happen.

RIP Robin you''ll be missed

It is sad that someone who could bring so much joy and laughter into the lives of others was so sad inside. I for one don't understand how you can have that dichotomy

That's common among comedians (and entertainers of all stripes). Many feel compelled to make others laugh (or dance or sing) to deal with their own pain. As a comedian, especially, it allows one to say many things out loud that are otherwise taboo.

For some, the laughter they create alienates them even more. They see others laughing as a result of what they said yet still can't share in that joy. Bitterness can ensue if not kept in check.

As another person who battles chronic depression, it is difficult to understand. There is a combination of chemical imbalance in the brain and distorted thinking, often as a result of that imbalance. I have been lucky enough to be helped by medication and therapy, but I have had to train myself to keep a positive outlook. There is a reason I sing songs on hope, love, and peace; if I let myself into the darkness, it can overwhelm me. Not everyone is as lucky as I have been.

I loved Robin Williams work, and am saddened by his death. My thoughts are with his family.

I feel the same way and also strive to be positive and constructive in my writings.
Darkness will overwhelm anyone if one absorbs enough. We all have our own tolerance levels to exposure we can handle. While one person can spend 12 hours as a vampire in a role playing game and walk away, another succumbs to a half hour screwing with tarot cards.

Just heard the news about an hour ago. Like others I have fought with depression off and on really since I was a kid. For me depression is not just feeling badly- it is feeling nothing. But still hard to get my head around this. RW's CBS show was cancelled in March. Maybe that had something that contributed.

While Robin was a bit much at times, I enjoyed his comedy. His dramatic, serious roles like in Good Will Hunting were really good. He shared quite a few demons with Jonathan Winters, which might be why they got along so well. So many comedians have a dark, deeply serious side.

I remember a post I read on a bike forum about 16 years ago from a guy who met Robin while riding over the Golden Gate Bridge. He caught and passed a rider on a very expensive bike who was very hairy. That rider soon sped up and passed him and he realized it was Robin. Robin was worn out from the effort so they slowed a little and talked. I don't remember the conversation other than it was fun.

RIP, Robin. :(

If a well-off guy like Robin Williams can't get help for his depression, what chance to the rest of us have?

While I know you are right it's still hard for those of us that are not that way to understand. The brain can do some strange things.
