Revisiting our band set list - trying to be more 'bar song popular'...

We had a good rehearsal last night and part of the time we discussed some of what works in the set lists, and what does not. Plus discussing bar songs vs festival songs. One issue being that we don't want to play the songs every classic rock cover band on the planet is playing, but at the same time we need to 'give the people what they want' - within limits of course. I brought up a set list Mark had posted that the All Star Trio play since they have good success with the crowds. Got a few ideas from there. Plus we talked about going back to a few songs we had dropped (our lead singer sounds a lot like Bob Seger so we used to do several of his songs). Our drummer mentioned he had been pretty doubtful that my latest tune would go over well (Champagne Supernova), but half the bar was singing along and he really likes the tune as well now.

Plus we ran two new songs off the cuff (Fast As You, Sweet Emotion) that seem to fit the direction well. Both will be added. And they want me to pick another couple songs that fit my voice well and would be in the same vein. I'm thinking 'Sick Of Myself' by Matthew Sweet and everyone seems to like the song in the band. Not sure if it's a great bar tune but I think it would be. It was a hit, it is danceable, and is right in my vocal wheelhouse.
 
I like that Matthew Sweet song. Probably be a good first set song.

Songs we've added in the last few months:

Get Lucky - Daft Punk (medley with Billie Jean)
We Got The Beat (go-gos) medly with Rock and ROll all Night by KISS
Lets Go - The Cars
Me and Julio medley with Mrs Robinson ala the Lemonheads - Simon and Garfunkle
Folsom Prison Blues
I'm Yours - Jason Mraz

Let me think a bit more....my brain is in low gear right now.
 
What about 'Girlfriend' from him? that was probably his biggest hit and it's a good tempo to get people on the floor.

Edit: if you guys have a FB page/twitter/whaterver, you could throw out some choices and let your friends/fans/family make suggestions or vote on candidates.

Yeah, it's been 2nd song for us since this summer. We stopped rehearsing it because we had it down cold and I forgot a couple lines in the second verse last gig. :embarrassed: Needless to say I looked them up and practiced them when I got home. :facepalm:
 
We did do 'I'm Yours' at one of our outdoor deck shows. It got a very subduded response - but that could be the crowd.
 
I expect a check for $.03 every time you play that Mraz tune...

Don't make me hunt you down for mah money.

Yeah... we play it semi-laid back. Like "Red Red Wine" tempo.

Then I probably owe you a case of beer.... I think we do at least 4 different Mraz tunes at every gig. :embarrassed:

I think "Sick of Myself" would be a great add. But I do really like Matthew Sweet. (On a side note, he has been making records of cover tunes with Susanna Hoffs and she is still smoking) I don't know what you guys already have in your setlist, but Weezer and Sublime have always gone over well when I did bar gigs.

santeria, what I got, Islands in the Sun, I Want You To are all staples of our set as well.

We do Santoria right now. And no Weezer. I definitely think we need to add 'What I Got'. It's an easy song to add.
