Recording Software

I mentioned in a different thread that i was in the process of building a small home studio. I still haven't decided which recording software to buy. I know Pro-tool is the main one but that's simply out of my budget. I was looking into Cakewalk Sonar 8 but then one of the guys at Guitar Center said Cubase was a really good one.

Any input would be helpful.

Also, if you are buying an audio interface, I've never seen one that didn't come with some software. It'll be a scaled down version, but it'll be more than capable of great recordings. I used Cubase LE (which was included with my Firepod) for several years before I came across Cubase SX. All the functionality is there, but some of the bells and whistles aren't.

The guy from GC mentioned about software coming with most interfaces. Cubase seems to be the main one. I don't know much about Cubase so it makes me a little nervous. I always hear about Cakewalk and Pro tools.
How would you comapre Cubase with Cakewalk?

Also, since you mention it, any suggestions on an audio interface? Been looking into those and it's making my head spin. haha

I don't have a whole lot of experience with anything except Cubase.

I like it though. It could be a little more intuitive (some functions are kind of hard to find because they are buried in drop down menus and such). I was not sure about it at first because it took me a while just to get a project started on it, but once I got used to it, I can have a new project started in a matter of a minute or so.

As for interfaces, I've used a Lexicon Omega and a Presonus Firepod. Both work well. I upgraded from the Omega to the Firepod for the extra inputs (Omega has 2 mic pres and 2 line-ins, Firepod has 8 combination mic pre/line-in inputs).

If you don't need a bunch of inputs, the Presonus Firebox is the same platform as the Firepod only smaller (2 inputs I think).

I have a firebox and have no complaints. That said, Muscians Friend is blowing out the Firepods for $399 right now - I called up and with not much effort got an additional 10% off.

Yeah, they've done several Firepod blowouts in the last year or so.

I paid $599 for my first one. I think it was worth it.

When they first dropped to $399, I bought a second one. :embarrassed:

Is that a headphone amp in there? I am wondering if that is how I could get a few people together and all of us get a set of headphones. It's kinda beat when all you can hear is the singer and not what they are singing to... then having to kick the main level back up every time you want to hear what was just recorded.

Yeah, it's a cheap 4 channel Behringer headphone amp. Works well.

I don't use it much, because I do most of my recording by myself and then overdub everything. Occasionally I'll have a jam session at the house and just mic everything and record it as we're playing normally....bleedover be damned.

It comes out pretty well. If I were doing a serious recording project and wanted the whole band to play live instead of overdubbing, I'd be able to put the amps in another room or isolation booth and everybody could wear headphones as monitors.
