Not sure if that story checks out - but if it does I would be unhappy. I know I can always burn my own CD, but do prefer a physical medium for music.

I have a feeling that there are many people who will want a tangible product. While many people use downloads there are enough out there who still buy CDs. It is like the constantly touted end of print books.
Of course, since the world is supposed to end in 2012, I guess the CD would as well.

It was also supposed to happen twice this year, but the CDs saved us man! OUR STRENGTH ARE THE CDS.

i have no problem with CDs going away as a physical format. however, mp3 is NOT a replacement solution. downloadable wav and flac need to be offered instead.

Album art will be a big loss. I suppose one way to get around that would be to create in the purchase of the downloadable version an interactive component that would go beyond album art...yes I know artists/labels create websites that provide this material, but perhaps the next step would be the download providing material that can be flipped through in itunes etc.

I only buy downloads of songs I gotta learn from an artist for gigs. Outside of that, I still buy CD's as love read the liner notes as well as the songwriters names and all of the other good stuff that comes with it. Fortunately the artists that I listen too (e.g. Carl Verheyen, Danny Gatton, etc.) are not mainstream and are mostly likely to still have product.
That is such a quack! Because vinyl is now on its way back - well sort of - the companies are commanding high dollars to possess these gems from the past.

I am with you guys. In fact I just really enjoyed picking up the new Wilco album on CD, which had a cool album art thing going on with a cardboard folder and a "record sleave" for the CD that I really like. I immediately imported it onto my computer to back it up, as I do with all CD's I buy. But still, I want that option. Hopefully that story is not that accurate.
It is getting really hard to buy CD's around here these days though. Other than Walmart, Barnes and Noble, Target, and Starbucks, I can't really think of where to go in Idaho to buy CD's.

They just opened a large used/new media store about 1/2 mile from our house called Tradesmart. Tons of used CD's and vinyl as well. A dangerous place...
