Practice Diary.

ok...back to work on this thing. For some reason I've been obsseded with Eric Johnson/Joe Bonamassa pentatonic licks so I wrote a bunch in E and I'm trying to get them clean.

Composing licks and then trying to get them executable has been a great help lately.

Funnily enough, this is exactly what I've been doing. I came up with this earlier, based on a Bonamassa type lick from a BCC track, making use of the 5ths and 4ths in the pentatonic scale and phrasing it without any bends or typical blues moves..a whole different effect. Economy picking probably works best for this with the way the phrase is layed out.

My stuff is along those lines (no bends or other articulations) but more scalar and less intervallic in nature.

I have this one too..the tempo is the target..I'm not there yet. :embarrassed: This could be fingered a few different ways, but I like the way this fingering sounds:

added a few Junior Watson licks to the book yesterday.

I might write a "Guitar Yoga" workout as a daily warmup this morning. I think it'll be three three week long cycles of technique builders that you use as a daily warmup...the cycles will be long enough to make a small difference in your playing but not so long that they are not doing anything. I get stuck in ruts easily with stuff like this so it'll be cool to organize it.

So this week has been interesting...each day I've cranked out a page of "licks" that have been pretty much some technical issue I've wanted to work on...not sure if its as much a diary at the moment as a "Lick a day" sort of thing. Earlier in the week there was a ton of pentatonic stuff ala Eric Johnson and Joe Bonnamassa. Today has been a bunch of Oz Noy-inspired whole tone and altered licks over a D7 chord that were trigered by listening to this song on the way into work:

Right now I'm using Guitar Pro 6. I hate it but I don't have the budget to get a new copy of Finale.

I'm not using anything right now, but would like to start. What do you hate about Guitar Pro 6? I'm prolly not going to start with a $600 piece of software, but if it were a guitar... oh never mind. Yes I'm a hypocrite :)

GP is a good starting point but if you're doing actual music publishing it sucks.

Mark and Mo: Enjoying this thread... hope y'all don't mind me steal***, um, "trying" your licks out!

altoidman; cheap/free, check out tux guitar - usable, not amazing, but usable, and free.

this week has been pretty interesting. The pentatonic stuff I was working on last week seems to have paid off in terms of purely tightening up my playing (and speed) but I couldn't play anything interesting to save my life. I guess its back to vocabulary building and whatnot for a bit
