Pointers for Breaking Hold

Brylee

Over The Top
I was recently given my grandfather's old Gibson from the 70's. It's an amazing instrument and I've heard others play it like a dream. So, in honor of the gift and because I've always wanted to learn, I've decided to get this whole guitar playing thing going.

Here's my problem: I've played the violin for 10 years now and it is incredibly hard for me to not use that hold when I'm trying to learn the chords on the guitar...and a violin hold just does not work with a guitar. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to unlearn or break the hold in order to have an easier time getting the chords right? This is really driving me crazy.

can you maybe take a picture of how you hold the guitar? it'll prevent us from playing 20 questions on the circumstances of what you're doing now.

When I get in front of my computer I'll post a few videos for you on the subject

I'll try and take a picture tomorrow and put it on here. Thanks for the idea. I know the hold is totally wrong, I just didn't know if anyone else on here played another instrument that required different holds that might have some tips on how they go back and forth.

Thanks for the videos. Had a bit too much fun for Christmas so I'm not going to attempt anything productive until tomorrow but I really appreciate the fast response on this. I'll let you know how the videos go and see where we go from there.

This thread inspired me to post a sticky with all of the videos I've done on general guitar stuff this year: http://markweinguitarlessons.com/fo...uot-collection-of-lessons&p=510933#post510933
