Played my first round of golf today

Poor old Geordie's array...
Been doing the driving range on and off for a few years. My neighbour took me round our local course of which he's a member this morning.

Little 9 holer.

I'm a pretty laid back dude 99% of the time but f**k me I understand how people get mad playing this game.

Hit a few great shots, a bunch of stinkers and lost 2 balls but it was good fun. We weren't keeping score it was just for a bit of fun but I managed to beat him on a hole and draw a few.
 
I took up golf last year (at the ripe old age of 62) and fervently wish I had done so earlier so that I would at least have a half-respectable swing by now. It IS a frustrating game, but only if you're keeping score. :wink:
 
My dad got me a set of clubs when I was 13 in an attempt to get me into the game and play with him. It really was an exercise in frustration. Just making contact with the ball was a pain in the ass, and my shots went all over the place. Fast forward about 30 years and I find myself taking up the sport again at the urging of my wife who expressed an interest in taking up the game. I went to a pro for a swing analysis, and he gave me some good pointers on how to improve my swing. I have decided to take some lessons to see if I can get my shots to be somewhat more consistent. I have been hitting the driving range quite a bit since then.
 
It looks fun. I dont like that it doesn't get you physically fit or develop a worthwhile skill.

likewise bro. Me and my friends used to play golf in the late 90's but we just did the "suntan special" which was after 2:embarrassed:oPM here in the desert so you can imagine how that was, no carts just walking but for us it was more about smoking pot instead of the game. There were also a few tournaments we played because a friend worked for an electric company and they would do 1 or 2 a year....those were strictly getting as fucked up as we could pounding the free beer. I wouldn't be caught dead playing now it's a waste of water here in the desert even though they use reclaimed and it's the poster sport for you know who.
 
Well done jbj. Golf is really hard on beginners. There is no open E chord in golf. :grin:

The payoff is that when you do string some good shots together and get par or even birdie, it feels so good!

i've got a tee time for 10:45 tomorrow.
i took the game back up about 7 years ago, after having left it for 16 years.
started playing when i was 6, but still look like i just started playing a month ago :facepalm:
(mid to upper 40's for 9 holes. a few low 50's now and then.)

i will say this: golf is THE hardest sport to play WELL, consistently.
but on the plus side, it's also a sport where you don't need another person to play. and you can play it into your 70's or even 80's.
try that with football.

The neighbour in question is 80 next year. He can still hit a ball further than me :grin:

I've also done the Queen Mother's castle but that's not relevant to the thread :embarrassed:
 
I'm pretty sure golf has given birth to more colorful phrases than any other sport....

I played a lot of golf in HS, and even worked as grounds crew at a posh private club in College. I really have not played much at all since college. Too expensive of a sport for me.

Hitting a great tee shot is like pulling off a great solo. Enjoy it, because it may be a while before it happens again.
You get cocky, over confident, or worse yet, nervous and it all goes to shit real fast. Like everything worth doing, you have to practice it until you can't screw it up.
