Question: pc techie folks

it seems my recording/online pc is kinda taking a shit in the bed...
I assume it's the HD going, it's an old machine.
running XP now, but was Vista when I got it. and Vista was new then...gives you an idea of the age.


now, here's the rub.

my DAW won't work right on anything past Vista.
and I fucking hated Vista. took forever to get started.
XP works great with all my cheap (free) DirectX plug-ins for the DAW

should I buy a new HD or would I be better off buying a new tower and just switching it to XP?

I have another tower in the house, which runs Win7, which I dig, but it doesn't like the DAW...so it's not much use in that sense.

the tower (and I assume it's the HD doing this) is making some really weird grindy sounds at times...
I've already backed up all my important (to me) stuff, so no worries if it suddenly dies, but I'd rather be prepared, ya know?
 
You probably already know this and don't care, but XP is no longer supported by the MS Mother Ship. It's a hacker's dream. Next thing you know, your latest original music will be used (uncredited) as the background music for some shoddy porn flick.

any time I try to use one of thopse plug-ins on that machine, the program freezes up

Actually, XP support runs through March, after which it will no longer be supported with updates, etc. If you're using it strictly for recording, that's OK, but there's no way you should ever connect to the web after March, because I'm betting your machine WILL be taken over by hackers and used for their nefarious purposes, which might not bother you -- but it WILL slow down your system!
 
okay, I'll keep the XP machine offline at that point.

but I still don't know whether to buy a new machine and swap OS, or just a new HD for this machine...

I've been using this one for years, and more or less know my way around it.
also, a new DAW = more money
and I'd still want this tower running.
so it'd be fix this tower, plus new DAW

Just make sure that you get one to match your hard drive controller.
There're two common types: IDE and SATA.

Based on the age of the PC, is guess you have an IDE drive.
If you pop the cover on the tower, you can find out. If the cable going to the hard drive is a ribbon cable, it's IDE.
If it's a smaller, usually red-jacketed cable, it's SATA.

An IDE drive will be hard to come by as the SATA drives are more prevalent - and the manufacturers make what is selling now, not what used to sell a while ago.

screw it, I can pick up a new tower pretty cheap.

And the DAW you have provides no newer versions or updates that make it compatibile with Win7?
