I am too dang cheap to get a smart phone - 'cause if I get one then #1 daughter will want one too. And then our phone bill will double overnight and that is not in the budget plans at this moment. I splurged last phone when I got one with a mini-keyboard...

The smart phone I had drove me crazy. No matter how often I locked the touch screen, it would unlock and fill with gibberish. If I tried to do anything online it was hard to scroll down and across the screen. The keypad was pitiful; I had trouble hitting the key I wanted and had to constantly backspace and try again to hit the button just right. When I saw waht it was costing me to get that frustrated I gave up and wnet back to the flip phone.

This. Get what works for you. I was pretty impressed with the navigation tool when I was in Boise yesterday. So, so much better than the google maps function that was on my 3G.
I got 4 years (almost exactly) out of my iPhone 3G. Glad to be upgraded now though.

I was a long time holdout on the smartphones but now that I have one, I am finding it to be a great tool, especially for work. I was at a conference recently and was able to keep up with a lot of my work from my phone. And that is my clunky iphone 3. I'm due for an upgrade in December so I will definitely take advantage. Not sure if I can spring for the 5 but seriously considering it, primarily because I do keep stuff for a while.

I bought my iPhone5 the same day my friend bought a Galaxy S3 on the same carrier.
It's supposed to be the best droid phone out there and I was curious how well it would do versus mine. His phone is a bit wider so it's probably better for fapping (gack).
Anyway, his phone was doing odd things within 10 days of purchase: hanging, spontaneously rebooting, shutting down all by itself. I keep telling him to get get it looked at, maybe they'll replace it but he won't do it. He's one of those guys who will stew frustratedly for months until he blows up about it but honestly I've had no problems and he's already unhappy with his.
Oh, here's one reason I dig the 5 - the pano mode is amazing. Cellphones don't normally take pictures like this:

Four months now and I'd like to amend my observations:
iTunes sucks. It sets a new standard for suckiness. It's unintuitive and sluggish as hell. And it has a really shitty way of starting a multi-hour download and assuming you have nothing else to do with your computer or iPhone during that time.
It's a user-hostile copyright-obsessed piece of crap that makes everything twice as hard as it should be. Except for buying more stuff -- that's the only thing it makes easy.

The fact that the "give Apple money" use case is so simple and straightforward tells me there were some deliberate choices made here. They could make it not suck. They chose suck.

i've never had a problem with itunes. i also only keep about 8gb of music on my phone and never buy anything from the itunes store. so i'm certain that has a lot to do with my lack of issues.
iTunes on the phone is fine. The current version of iTunes on my computer is shit.

I ended up getting the iPhone5 and love it. I'm seriously impressed with what this phone can do and I am getting better at using more of the functions to make my life easier. I'm sure the 4S would have been fine too but this phone is a substantial upgrade from my 3. The only negative is that I have to get a new waterproof case for when I'm fishing since the new phone is bigger.
And of all things "i", iTunes is the one thing I have never liked. I'm pretty sure it is responsible for making some of my music unavailable. Music that I have ripped from CD's I own.

I agree with itunes being the devils spunk. On my iPhone its fine, easy to use and to play etc but the 'new' version of itunes on my comp is just mental. Whyd they change everything?

Fun thread to read. My work just upgraded the iPhone 4 each person was issued with iPhone 5s due to the slow death of one colleague's iPhone. I'm not complaining mind you, but it didn't seem necessary to me as one could still get the 4 for free to replace ONE broken device.
That said, I'm not overwhelmed by the upgrade. It's a great device, but the 4 was as well. The slightly larger screen is nice, but the extra row of buttons on the vertical isn't a huge improvement and the width on the horizontal is fine, but not a mind-blowing change in regards to viewing anything, including movies. It's definitely a great device and does everything I need it to do well and probably better than the 4, but not to the point that I'm noticing much...except maybe the image quality of Netflix during the commute.
I like the Galaxy III a lot though, but the new plans from Verizon and AT&T...the share shit...are total crap. A co-worker told me how he called them to see how he could upgrade and keep his plan and they started talking about reviewing his usage to justify the new plan and it expense. My biggest gripe is that we now provide my mother-in-law with a cell phone that she uses in another state. It's a "feature" phone and she never has and never will use data as she only uses it for calls and at a far less frequent clip than we use our phones. Verizon, however, wants to increase the monthly cost for a similar/new feature phone from $9.99 to $30.00. That's what we pay for UNLIMITED data on my wife's Samsung. And, it's not like data is getting more compact on the internet, so their basic plans could eat it up rather quickly. Further, 4G (LTE) isn't available in more than 15-20% of the country, so unless you live in a 4G city you're still looking at 3G or less data speeds at 4G prices ($40.00 bucks to share two gigs of "data").

Oh yeah, and the new iTunes for computer use is total shite. Even the layout and arrangement of the library is weak. And the search functionality that hasn't worked for me since I "upgraded".

Yeah. We almost need to get a "cell carriers suck" thread. If you hear about the plans available in europe and Japan and what the phones there can do you would wonder why we put up with what we have here.
