They absolutely ruin your tone when they are on. Still, they definitely get attention when you go nuts.

I had one of the first generation. I know I wasn't crazy about what it did to the sound when I turned it on. The trade-off for no Floyd headaches and in-tune polyphonic dive-bombs was worth it, though.
I have a few presets on my EHX Ring Thing that do Whammy now. It still affects the tone but it's worth it when I want the effect. Put enough fuzz on and it just becomes part of the sound.
newbuilder is right: They are crazy fun. Wait until you find the right interval for the "Owner of a Lonely Heart" solo.

I messed with it during practice last night and found some really cool stuff. The harmony section set to fifths gets a crazy cool harmony for lead riffs and does a cool power chord thing on the lower strings. Then on clean with the delay on pretty heavy and my trem pedal on a slower swell with the harmony set to fifths gets a cool glassy clean mess of strings.
I have not heard any loss that I am concerned with, not sure which gen this one is, but it does what I wanted and makes cool sounds that can get really neAt and real trippy.

I love mine. I mostly use the Octave setting. With the Up Octave, I can simulate a 12- string guitar or play harmonized solo like Owner of a Lonely Heart. Same with soloing on the low side.
I dig the 5ths as well. The dive bomb is pretty slick too

Mediocringly Derivative
I sold a Whammy IV because it was just unbearable. IMO, the Eventide Pitchfactor is the current king. That said, the Whammy is a lot of fun. And yeah, it nails those harmonized 4ths and 5ths we've all grown up listening to.
