Question: New Project - Help Needed

Hi guys,

So I am done with one project, so I want to start with a new project. This time to refinish my old crappy Steinberger Spirit.

I need to start with removing the current finish. From the pic below you can see a bit of the finish broken off. It looks like a thick plastic layer.

How would you go about removing it? With a heat gun?

And knowing me I will probabky scorch the wood. Guess minimal surface burns can be sanded out
 
Wow! If I wasn't seeing the side of the guitar, I'd think that was a veneer.
 
It's going to get an opaque finish so i dont really care what the wood looks like
 
I had a Fender Lead where the finish cracked like that. I just used a putty knife to scrape it off. I was careful doing it though so I didnt damage the wood.

I tried that and the putty knife wasn't thin enough to get underneath.
 
I think I would try using heavy duty paint stripper on it if you're not going to use a clear finish on it...
 
Update:

- Used a heat-gun to remove the finish. Was a pain-in-the=ballsack, as the finish did not melt but crumbled. Anyway, managed to get it all off, sanded the entire body.

Then stained the top and back (left the sides blank) and finished with tru-oil.

Also sanded the neck, stained and finished with tru-oil

I used woodfiller to direct-mount the pickups and left off the plastic pickup rings. Cleaned and re-assembled all the hardware

Just restrung the guitar , did a quick (amateur) setup and it plays and sound beautifully

Thanks guys. You can see a big spot on the side, which was a knot in the original wood and a brown stripe in the upper horn, which is also a wood imperfection. I could have done more to iron out some flaws, and the staining has bled a little in spots but since it was a workhorse cheapo, i wasn't too fussed

It definitely feels lighter and the neck is a lot slicker. The refinish had definitely given me some new inspiration to play the thing again
