New Mod Day: Poor Man's PRS Modern Eagle II???...

I've been playing my Custom 22 with the solid Indian Rosewood neck for some time and loved the feel, action, and tone I was getting from it... and decided to take it one step further.

I had already put the unplated brass posts on the bridge, the smoked amber knobs, and a rosewood truss cover...

... but today I started installing a set of 57/08's from a Modern Eagle II with the brushed covers and gold poles (thank you AtomicMassUnit).

While I was doing the pickup change, I swapped the tuners for a set I had with pearl tuner buttons and I used gold washers under the nuts to continue the hybrid hardware look.

I'm still wiring up the coil tap on the push/pull, so I'll give a tone report when I'm done.

NICE...most definitely an improvement in style and class...:thu:

...do the new pickup change the sound alot?
 
I will be honest... I decided to replace the Duncan Custom shop/ McCarty bass combination primarily because of the looks, not because I was unhappy with the tones...

... that said, I went from a 10K bridge, 7.7k neck to an 9.2 neck 8.1 combo. I was nervous about making the neck any hotter because the Dragon II that I yanked out of there was 8.5 and sounded like mud. I loved the sound of the bridge pickup but couldn't find a hot enough neck pickup that would stay clear.

On to the pickup swap:

But all the stuff they've been saying about the 57/08 pickups is not just marketing hype. These pickups are VERY warm and articulate without ever getting muddy. Another impressive feature is they sound great ALL THE WAY through the range of the volume knob. :rawk:

My only tiny niggle is the coil taps don't seem to make as big a difference as the duncan/mccarty did. Honestly, I can live with it because the pickups sound so great with just the volume knob change. The bridge is hotter and has some great sparkle, but I think the thing I'm the most pleased with is having a matched set. Going from Neck to Both to Bridge is a much more natural progression and not as dramatic of a change like I had before.
 
I prefer to keep mine balanced like that too...alot of guys will go with an unbalanced set for added flexibilty but I like my tone to stay somewhat consistent throughout...Id rather change guitars for different tones...but then again I ain't gigging so...:shrug:
 
I think you should trade that guitar in for a cherry-red stained, Floyd equiped, maple neck/fb one :wink:

haha... Is this candyland? I"m almost to the finish and you want me to go back to square one? Been there, done that, got temp banned from the forums and all I have to show for it is this crummy T shirt. :tongue:

He's referring to the Carvin I custom ordered back in 2004 or 05 when the Carved tops first became available. While the fit and finish were fine, tonally it was lacking compared to the several PRS guitars I was A/Bing it with. I didn't get my money back fast enough to buy a natural topped CE model that I really liked and then the PRS Anniversary models became available in 2005 and I bought the Orange 20th Anniversary Std Satin instead.

Oh yeah, I got into several incidents with the mods on the Carvin forum over stupid things like strap buttons and anything that was Non-Carvin... so I left the forums in search of a "real world" place where people could actually discuss gear they use, not just what's available from one manufacturer.

I've found a PRS that I actually find appealing:

Short of its lack of an ebony fingerboard, I find it hard to find fault with this one.
 
I think Howie has a slightly more "champagne" version of the goldtop finish... but they're all difficult to pin down as they change looks in different lighting.
