New Amy Winehouse tour!!!

Just when you thought the music industry had exhausted the notion of cynicism, comes this nugget:

"An Amy Winehouse hologram tour is in the works, her father Mitch Winehouse told Reuters. The shows are set to debut in 2019 and will feature a live band accompanying vocals from Winehouse’s original recordings. According to her father, all proceeds from the concerts will benefit the Amy Winehouse Foundation."

I'm just guessing here, but I wonder if "proceeds" means "money left after Mr. Winehouse is paid a fat fee for his imaginary role in this repulsive gang rape of his daughter's corpse."

One more good reason to despise Pitchfork - what sort of person says "yeah, sure, let's run with this story?" They manage to combine stupidity and soullessness in ways that plumb depths previously not seen.

I want to rant my ass off about this, but just don't have the requisite energy for it today.

In my various wanderings at the perimeter of the music industry, I had to be aware of copyright stuff much more than I thought. Not sure why, but I somehow thought all that stuff was sort of taken care of automatically, like the electric utility or something.

The Great Napster Wars of late 90's/early 00's (who can ever forget - or forgive - Sony's 'digital rootkit'?) made me realize just how horrible people are willing to get over money when they already have plenty. Hilary Rosen and the RIAA tried to break ordinary people in order to 'make examples of them,' a true "Handmaid's Tale" approach to wealth accumulation and defense. I lost friends, and still don't miss them at all.

Another peculiar animal is the heir to the publishing fortune. I was amazed at how many offspring of creative geniuses are living in Sherman Oaks / Locust Valley / Chevy Chase / Lake Forest, never having worked hard at anything in their life save one thing: hiring nasty lawyers to ensure that their quarterly checks keep coming. There are a lot of these people.

The overwhelming shift in public sentiment (and consequently, legislation) has left the idea of 'public domain' little more than a quaint footnote. And the reasons that make public domain important - gone, like our increasingly dwindling public lands (same mindset, different topic). Share stuff!???! What the fuck do you mean 'share things with other people? Are you fucked? WE'RE GETTING RICH HERE. FUCK OTHER PEOPLE."

Looks like Mr. Winehouse needs work. For all I know, the "Amy Winehouse Foundation" is a fine outfit (link https://app.justcharity.org/charities/amy-winehouse-foundation to financials via hasty Google search). But it's hard to see how a Foundation goes from +/- $5,000 annual cashflow to promoting a giant tour.

Shame on Pitchfork for retransmitting a press release that is in such poor taste.
 
Due to her habit of showing up drunk and stumbling, mumbling and blowing off the audience as she fucked off sitting on the drum riser I wouldn't have even paid money to see her while alive. So, if the hologram doesn't do that at least every second show I would have a problem with authenticity.

It feels like a cash grab to me, but maybe I'm just too cynical. There's a bajillion ways to siphon money off the top before the profit is calculated. And even if everything that's leftover goes to the foundation, Mitch Winehouse will probably draw a nice salary from the foundation.
 
If you follow the link I posted, the Foundation is very small potatoes (certainly not able to provide Mitch with a salary for anything other than beer and the occasional doner kabab).

If I were to get very dark, @Knox in Box , I'd enjoy figuring out what a real AW hologram would do on her tour. Oh look, the hologram's vomiting! etc.
 
Condé Nast currently owns the Fork. Expecting anything other than obedience and fawning w/r/t famous/rich people is silly.

And reprinting awful press releases is required behavior by all pop culture outlets...otherwise they’ll lose the precious access that is their lifeblood.

Also, it’s quaintly charming that you still think pointing out that the music business is disgusting is still something that needs saying.

Those dweebs kowtow to SoundCloud rappers and dudes who are in Tame Impala. Mitch Winehouse is as good as Lil Whomever.
