Need a COMP

Let me be honest....I have never owned a compressor...never. After playing some slide on a friend's rig who has a Keeley two knob on his board I realized what I am missing...especially for slide. I don't really want to spend the cheddar for a keeley. Are there any recommendations for a cheaper but good quality comp's? I am thinking Xotic or MALEKKO...maybe BBE...any help is appreciated.
 
I use and Xotic SP, Wampler Ego and a few others. For what you are doing the Xotic SP would be perfect!
 
A lot of people seem to like the Wampler. I really like the EarthQuaker Devices Warden and the Empress Compressor, but that one ain't cheap. My favorite is the SlideRig and that's even more not cheap.
 
SlideRig looks pretty awesome. It is definitely not cheap though!!! Trying to stay in the low 100's. SlideRig is definitely going on my wish list for when I get some gig (aka straight to gear) $.

The Wampler is great for Chicken Picken'
My Janglebox is great for that Rickenbacker chime.
My BYOC (Ross clone) great for just rock.
The MXR Dyna Comp for EJ sounds or funk.

Never tried the others.

As a side note, my buddy who is a great slide player in the southland uses an Xotic SP in his rig. He is purely a slide style player, I rarely ever see him fingering his fretboards. All his guitars are in open tunings with his Derek Trucks signature tuned to open E ala Trucks, Allman.
 
It should be noted that every pedal mentioned in this thread is a tweak of the same circuit. So find the one that's right for you.

that has the "chip" (some claim the chip is fake)
either way its quiet and squishy
and only $50


 
just found this on the chip

CA3080A is a premium CA3080 with tighter specs that has been tested to guarantee that the input offset voltage and gm fall within specified limits. CA3080 is the garden-variety version that will have more unit-unit variation than the "A". You can use "A" wherever the non-"A" is used. "E" signifies plastic DIP package, "T" signifies metal TO-5 can package. Thus, CA3080AE is the premium unit in the plastic package, CA3080E is the garden-variety unit in plastic package.

That's a nice unit...I bet I can cut through the mix if I mic it! I will def have a unique sound...maybe someone will even make a clone.messedup0

I think I am going to try the xotic. Has anyone ever used the JHS modded Dynacomp?

btw analogman is the one who told me this chip is probably fake

In 2004, the compressor chips used in the Dynacomp and Ross clones (CA3080E) became unavailable- they are no longer made. But we bought thousands of these chips just in time, so we will be able to sell these compressors for at least a few more years. These chips were first labelled as RCA, then Harris when the company changed their name, finally Intersil when they changed yet again. I used to go to RCA/Harris in Mountaintop, PA when I was working on their semiconductor test systems in the '80s and '90s.
