My company in a nutshell

Yeah it can be pretty shitty for everyone.

The worst part is that sooner or later a new Sr Director or VP will come along and want to prove their worth to the board by enacting some "operational efficiency" re-org where they offshore the tier 1 & 2 support teams to an Indian 3rd party provider, laying all those folks off, leaving just a small escalation group domestically.

Big big cost savings that they can say "see I did this" & bounce into their new role as CIO/CTIO at their next company.....right before the reality really sinks in with upper management on how completely awful the support has become and they have to decide if they want to bring it back onshore or keep saving that tasty bottom line.
This is a reality in the tech industry even outside of IT. I have seen so much engineering off shored in the last few years, I keep wondering when my number will be up.

Indeed. It's a game of always trying to be one step ahead

Pro tip: never answer your phone or reply to emails at work.
Do you mean personal or work-related?

I have some teachers that think that my department is spying on them. Admittedly, that's fair, because the outside company that used to do IT for the district I work for WAS spying on them. They installed cameras in the classrooms (illegal) and had tracking devices in the ID cards that every employee and student had to wear which were read by devices in the ceilings of the buildings. The custodial office in the high school had TVs on the wall that the cameras were fed to and they had somebody watching the TVs at all times. It was truly a fucking creepshow.

That bullshit is why I'm there and they're not, though.

However, there are some that think we're no different and now think that's just what IT does. You know, forget fixing computers, installing software, setting up accounts, etc. We're spying on people who's most exciting moment of the day is when they realize their kindergarten student didn't shit themselves for the first time this week.

The reason why this is in reply to your post: I honestly don't give a fuck what anybody does as long as it's legal and they're not neglecting the students and their job. I'm not watching anybody. I'm not reading people's emails. I'm not monitoring phone calls. I'm not even monitoring web traffic outside of filtering the students' Chromebooks from going to porn sites and the like, and that's automatic. When people say "They are watching us" I like to remind them that I am "they" and show them all the guitar shit I have open on my computer, including this forum.

That's not a bad move but it is to the extreme end of possible behaviors. I'd suggest never do anything on your work computer you wouldn't want HR, CIS, your granny, or your boss to see. Keep the personal use to a reasonable time unless company policies are different.

My experience has been quite different than @GilmourD

In prior jobs, at HR's request & compliant with your employment agreement/handbook, I've installed software to track everything you do on your computer.
I've configured all of your work email to be shadow copied to an archive to be used against you if/when you're dismissed, configured a web filter to report to HR employees who hit a job site or when you spend more the X hours browsing the web. I've had to investigate your computer files & activity at your manager's request. Now in some of these cases, the employee's behavior prompted this. In others, it was someone they just wanted gone/may want gone and wanted to collect due cause.

My current work computers have several security agents that permit CIS to see logs of every file I touch, every use of my administrative accounts, inspect all of my actions & applications for potential intellectual property policy violations. They can reconstruct anything I've done w/ my machines in the past several days with these agents, if they want...I just don't give them a reason to.

Well, I do work in education. The teacher union gets pissed off when there's too many staff meetings but simultaneously doesn't do anything substantive for the teachers (like actual pay increases or fighting for larger classroom budgets to prevent teachers from using their own money for supplies). We sent out an email telling people that a certain thing doesn't come under our purview (I think it was online textbooks) and who to contact regarding that and the union complained.

I didn't mean don't answer your work phone/email for fear of being watched by your employer. I meant don't answer your work phone/email so you don't have to deal with people you work with. It is joke har har.

At my last job I was well known for screening calls/emails, which would then require a visit to my office where an actual human to human/semi-human interaction could take place. Obviously this doesn't work for people that work in another location... you just pretend they don't exist.

Our IT department can barely remote in to the right computer half the time. I can't tell you how many times I see them pop up for a second, realize they're in the wrong computer and then log out. It cracks me up.
The therapist that had the broken charger since January 24th just got her charger yesterday. The wrong charger. So apparently they don't even know what computer they issued her.
