When I was in the NG, it was during the transition from C-rations to MREs. Since I was in a Guard unit, we got the latter, instead of the delightful first-generation MREs. My intestines and taste buds have never stopped thanking me!

i thought of the MRE diet years ago. these are well balanced meals that if one could hold down they would lose weight very quickly and safely with proper exercise and a DI spitting in your face for motivation.

hey, at least it's got tabasco to mask the flavour of all the other 'food'

and 'Orange beverage base powder'? Thank you, i'll stick to just plain water thank you very much

You also burn calories just trying to pinch a dump after 5 days of those things.

Sweating, cursing inclusive.

I don't know if you've ever had Tang, but that's what this is. Sickly sweet and kind of orange-like.

Ahhhh, memories. Of course, I was there when the C-Ration to MRE transition happened, so I got the best of both worlds :thu:. We liked the C-rations because they came with a cool can opening tool that came in handy for other things. THe original MREs had the awesome beef or chicken dehydrated patties. While you could rehydrate them, we were too lazy to bother. Nothing like the taste of a dried ground meat "cookie" :cheese:

I actually kinda like some MREs...this one included...the drink powder contains a bit of iodine for water purification, the extra sweetener covers up the metallic taste...

The Mountain House brand of freeze dried meals are quite a bit better than MREs...

I liked most every MRE I've ever had :embarrassed:

They didn't fill me up, but how can you mess up bean's n' franks, or Dinty Moore beef stew? Even the corned beef hash was ok idn_smilie

Granted, I wouldn't go out of my way to buy them, but next time I go hiking in the Rockies I'd like to take some for lunch :embarrassed:

back when me Da was in the Air FOrce, I loved the MRE's he'd bring home *cough*

mind ya, I was still a kid.

The food wasn't actually that bad. Reminds you of high school cafeteria food but I've had worse. The crackers have zero flavor, hence the peanut butter (or cheeze whiz, depending) but are edible.
The cookies were quite tasty.

MRE's??.....shit....yer living high up on that hog......back in my day we had C-rats and I think some shit from the Korean war. there is a DAMN good reason every pack came with a tiny bottle of Tabasco.....to KILL the taste of everything.

We were transitioning to MREs when I was in the Corps. The freeze dried strawberries were the only good thing.I started to pack cans of ravioli, beef stew,soup...
The extra weight in the ALICE pack was worth it.
