Mayonaise Based Salads

I like mustard potato salad from the local store.

Macaroni salad, not so much. They also have an AWESOME deviled egg salad, though.

I guess it depends on the stuff. I don't really care much for mayo itself though.

I have to make one on average 4 out of 5 days I work. Sometimes upwards of 3 mayo based salads a day.

You know what old folks go ga ga over? Shredded carrots, raisins and mayo salad.

I like them well enough as a whole, but just enough mayo to bind.

To add something real gross to the conversation, we make a jello, where you add mayo, sour cream and cottage cheese to lime jello, then let it set. messedup0

I love me some mayo-based tuna salad, egg salad, macaroni salad, potato salad, and chicken salad.
Pasta salad, OTOH, should contain no mayo.
Likewise, there should be no mayo on a hot dog or hamburger.
However, it is compulsory on a BLT (though merely the thinnest layer is required).
And Grave Bomber, that shit you're talking about sounds like something my grandparents used to make. Nasty!

I'm starting to suspect that American Mayo <> European Mayonnaise :embarrassed:

I'm thinking that too.

I grew up hating mayo, but it turns out what I was hating was Miracle Whip and a crappy store brand mayo. (not that all store brand is crappy. This was just crappy AND store brand.)

I'm still not a huge fan of store bought mayo, but mixed in to a recipe like in a salad, it doesn't much matter to me.

Now, as a condiment, I much prefer fresh made mayo - right out of the mixing bowl and on to the sammich fresh. And that's much better for you if you use good ingredients.

I HATE sour cream. HATE it. Cook with it, fine. But mix it into a salad or dip and I can taste it - almost every time. It makes me gag.

I can enjoy a very thin layer of mayo on a sandwich or burger - but it has to be a very small amount. Like a dime sized dollop. Any thing more than that is too much.

Also, for your consideration, the grossest shit ever; Waldorf Salad:

waldorf-salad-1-550.jpg

  • 1/2 cup chopped, slightly toasted walnuts
  • 1/2 cup celery, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup red seedless grapes, sliced (or a 1/4 cup of raisins)
  • 1 sweet apple, cored and chopped
  • 3 Tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Lettuce

That sounds awesome.
I don't think I ever had it. I've heard the term before, but never looked into what it actually is.
