Newsflash! Look what I found on LASERDISC at the used bookstore for $2.99!!!

It’s very good, for the most part. Very well-crafted, one of the great sword-fights, Tim Roth is always a terrific villain. But needless rape scenes have really not aged well, and that one is particularly bleak.

I wholeheartedly agree and yearn for the days when films only included rape scenes required to move the plot forward.

$2.99 was a good deal in 2019 for that dead format. I gave my laserdiscs and player to my brother-in-law more than a decade ago. We have tons of movies on VHS, DVD and Blu-ray. Yet, I have not played any of my physical, video media in years. We stopped buying physical discs right about the time 4k Blu-ray came along. Everything we watch now is either digital signal via antenna, streamed or played from a file.

Maybe, we'll stream Rob Roy tonight. Young Jessica Lang was gorgeous and she's quite the talent. She nailed the Joan Crawford role in the "Feud" series on FX.

Yeah, I really liked the movie, and the love story, but did not like the rape scene. I watched it part way through with my partner and it really disturbed her. (and me as I saw the impact on her). And we did not finish the movie. Which is too bad, as I like the rest of it.

It's one of many otherwise great films that are ruined by the inclusion of rape scenes. Once Upon a Time in America is another. It mars the movie so much that it makes it hard to recommend to someone. I wish films could be revised without those aspects.

I just want to remind everyone that Rob Roy is horrible and the lesson from the movie is don't watch it!
I don't think I've seen it. On Rotten Tomatoes, the audience score is 75%. The critic score is 73%. How bad could it be? We can mute it and close our eyes during the rape scene.

Never had a Laser Disc player but, if I ever found Fiddler On The Roof, I'd have to buy it.

Yes, I know, Z instead of S. Close enough.

I've always thought it was a pretty decent film.

True story, the place where William Wallace was captured before his eventual extradition to London and execution is now a suburb not a million miles from here.

The suburb is called Robroyston.

Man, I’d almost forgotten that. Hadn’t seen it in ages. Henry Fonda was fucking terrifying.

Straw Dogs and Scorsese’s Cape Fear are other great movies destroyed by single gross scenes.

And it blows my mind that there are still people who still watch and defend A Clockwork Orange, which is a whole other level of sick exploitation.

A Clockwork Orange has a 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The critic score is 86%. I think it’s an important Stanley Kubrick movie. So, I guess I’m going against the grain to defend it, at least in this thread.

Rape is an ugly part of life. Murder is even worse. Should film makers stop portraying those things in movies? It’s certainly worth considering.

I think rape and murder are shown to illicit an emotional response. Yes, a few sick people get off on them. I find them disturbing but I think it benefits me to feel those emotions. It helps me feel the proper depths of sorrow for the real life events I see and read about in the news. Food for thought.

A friend in high school had a laser disc player. His mom bought the Pacino film "Cruising "; thinking it was about gangsters. I guess she thought it was a modern take on "The Godfather".
