Lick of the Week - Up the Down 6th Chord (with contest!)

Well... I've been messing with this for the last two hours... coming up with neat riffs... seems to be migrating further and further away from how Mark does it... Anyways, this chord tone soloing stuff is cool, and you can always throw in a little modal or pentatonic flair here and there... I hope a few folks give this a go, shredders and noobs... It's a good exercise....
 
Haven't had any time since I posted above. Busy soccer travel weekend, Easter, and final day of skiing. I may hack away some more tonight.

Doing your own thing with it is what I want to see, though...it's supposed to be a starting point. :thu:

Hey Mark, I made a bass & drum practice loop backing track thing from a rehearsal of my tune Play That Baby from the video. Holler if ya want a copy.
 
BUMP! Am I the only one who has been messing with this? I didn't get anything completed for the recording-fest, but I aim to shot a video for this by the deadline...

We might have one or two other entries. Much less participation than I'd hoped....

I'm working on todays LOTW right now. Hopefully I can get the video shot today but the music is worked out.
 
This has just been a good exercise for me and my attention span, and I hope to hear other peoples interpretation of the idea...

I'm looking forward to it, too. I've been teaching a similar lesson to my students this week andits amazing how quickly they are able to start playing phrases that make more sense than when they were using pentatonic scales exclusively...

Absolutely. When I play blues I'm finding myself playing the dominant 7th less and less....I'll shoot for it in the 4th bar of the 12 bar and it gives a great cadence to the IV chord but I'm really loving the 6th lately :)

I hear Charlie Brown's teacher when I read this sentence. I spend so much time trying to learn and understand theroy, and I get nowhere. I don't know why it's so incredible difficult for me. It actually makes me feel stupid.

After going through Tom's jump blues lessons on comping, I actually understand what Mark said... Two months ago I wouldn't have...

His lessons are great because he is showing you something useful and then giving you the theory. So much of the time music theory is so dry and inapplicable how it is presented that it really does sound like the adults in a Charlie Brown cartoon if you start spouting it at your students like that. For someone who is not in college learning music and this is more a hobby than a profession it really makes a difference in how we present the information. You all deal with more complicated concepts in real life.

Well, I'm going to start a the second set of your online lessons tomorrow and once I'm finished with your set I'll give Tom's a shot. Hopefully it won't be over my head. I look at the theory stuff and all I can think is it's the alphabet and numbers wtf! Half of the time I think I'm making it more complicated than it has to be, the other half of the time I feel like I'm taking a non-euclidean geometry class.

I think you'll be fine. The second FOundations module starts with fretboard knowledge, caged root patterns and movable chord shapes so you'll be set up pretty well for what Tom has to offer I think.
 
I haven't been posting in this thread but I have been messing around with this lesson. I keep finding melodies to some jump blues songs I have heard. If I submit it'll be shot professionally on my iPhone.
