Larry Carlton

Is coming to Sun Valley and playing in early january. Worth seeing? Not sure if my wife would really get into it. I would enjoy it I think, but . . .

I was a huge fan many years ago but ever since he was shot his music has been a snooze fest. Too bad...

first, he wasn't shot, he was stabbed. and since then, besides his own music (which is not a snooze fest) he's been partnered up with Robin Ford a lot.
i would go. i can't speak about any of the stuff he's put out in maybe 5 years or so. but he does a lot of the old stuff too. he does a medley of all the tv/movie theme song hits he played on, including the stuff he did with Steely Dan. Kid Charlemagne, Don't Take Me Alive and Josie are worth it alone.
he goes over some of the yellowjackets stuff too. and usually he'll do TEH BP BLUES!!
his tone, and control should be seen by all. he's a big part of the craze to buy Dumbles in the 80's, because of his tone.
i don't know if your wife will appreciate him as well.

Cool that you still like him

yeah, I would enjoy the tone, and could enjoy his playing I suppose, but not thinking my wife would be into it, so would rather save the ticket money for something that is a better bet that she would enjoy.

Follow your own advice, Counselor. Larry is a great player and probably worth seeing live in an intimate setting sometime, but don't take your wife if she is not a fan. She'll be unhappy and then you'll be paying for it for years to come. Go with a friend who will dig seeing Larry, and then take your wife to something that she will enjoy.

I have never got it. Not him, not the playing, not the toanz, not Robben Ford, not separately, not together, not Steely Dan, not any permutation.

I might still be tempted, though, because Living Legend or whatever, but I sure as h*ck wouldn’t drag anyone’s wife along least of all mine.

He likely leaves the snoozer stuff (much of which I like to listen to anyway) at home when he plays live.
pretty much this^^^
i've seen him and he covers a wide range of his carrer, both solo and with everybody else. probably the slowest song he does is the BP Blues (it's called various things with the word 'blues' in it, but it originated at The Baked Potato, hence the BP), which picks right up about half way thru, but even the slower beginning has some of the sweetest bends and swells i've ever heard.
