Jebus it's been quite the week in work

Poor old Geordie's array...
Friday I had to administer some heavy duty (as in potentially life saving) seizure meds to a kid

Yesterday I happened upon a woman who has just started in our complex needs department (the one I generally work in with the most challenging kids) in floods of tears because she's really not coping. I mentioned in passing to my wife the other day that she looks really stressed out but I didn't think it was THAT bad - I'm guessing she'll be off with stress or quite in the next month or two.

I had my yearly professoinal progress meeting where you talk with management about what you want to achieve over the next academic year. It was all plain sailing with the deputy head teacher and just as I was about to leave she said:

"You know I'm going off on maternity leave soon and Nancy (head of years 1 and 2) is going to be taking on my role? Are you planning on applying for her job?"

me - It's not something I've even thought about, I'm only in the door a year and not really put any serious thought into promotion...

"Fair enough but I really think you should consider it, you'd do a great job and would have plenty of supporters for you getting it."


So yeah all of a sudden I need to have a serious think about wether to go for this or not. Unfortunately being a state school they're VERY anti nepotism :mad: but I've casually asked a few close colleagues if the promotion was mentioned to them in their meetings and nope, nada so it's obviously something she really thinks I'd have a shot at.

Deputy head teacher? You Brits sure put a lot of stock in titles! :confused:

Anyway -- good luck, should you decide to go for it!
 
Urm don't you guys have superintendents and shit?

Deputy Head = 2nd in command / in charge if the Head is out of school.

Depute / Head of year = 3rd in command

After that it's just us pleb teachers :grin:
 
Usually it is Principal - Top Dog.
Vice Principal - 2nd in command.

So a slightly different way of saying head and deputy head :embarrassed:

I'll have a lookat the application but I'm thinking I'll go for it. The other management team are all older so no maternity leave + if I went for their job once they leave it would be permanent IF I did apply and get this one it would be a 6 months acting position then back to the classroom so if I hated it, I'm not stuck there and if I liked it, its excellent experience for the CV.

Besides I'm thinking about the people in work - the ones who would do a good job have young families so probably wont want to take the burden on, one who would be great is off long term following an op and the rest I dont think would apply / dont strike one as management material.

Do they still have the Head Master title in use in The UK?
 
Intereting. A colleague - who I thought might have been interested in going for the position herself asked if I was going to apply.

I said I was going to have a think about it over the weekend - she said she couldn't handle the pressure so wasn't applying but thinks I should definitely go for it.

I must give off a management material vibe or come across as a ladder climbing arsehole :grin: :shrug:
 
Update:

There's no application process per se.

I put in my expression of interest yesterday. The headteacher said if I'm the only one that applies I get it by default!

If there's more than one then you have an informal chat with her and the depute (the one who suggested I go for iy) and they decide but its very much not an interview.

I had my yearly observed lesson with said depute today which is usually a pretty high stress situation but on the way out she said my lesson had been excellent and it was going to be a struggle to come up with areas for improvement.

The boss likes me too so this might actually happen :shrug:

I look forward to becoming 'the man' and being ostracised by my colleagues :grin:
 
So at least one other person is in for it so I've got to do the interview that isn't really an interview a week on Friday :shrug:
 
D-day tomorrow.

With the time they've set aside I think they're looking at 3 or 4 people, myself included.

I'm pretty zen about it all. I'll be chuffed if I get it but not fussed if I don't.


I'm debating wether my opening gambit to "why should we pick you?" should be- because this afternoons halloween disco will be shit if I storm off in a mood with all my gear if I don't get the job :embarrassed:
 
Didn't get it.

Boss said there was a cigarette paper between me and the person who got it and if they could, they would have split the job between us with me taking half the remit and her taking the other but she just answered the questions slightly better.

Fair enough.

Of the 4 of us that eventually applied, she's the only one (apart from myself) I think is suited and will do a good job. Plus it was starting to dawn on me that I would actually have to like do the job if I landed it :grin: :embarrassed:
 
Now onto more important things:

A few hours of entertaining drunk people with music from my MacBook for the same amount of £££s I earn per week in the day job :grin: :facepalm:

If only people needed entertaining and got drunk 8+ hours a day, every day and not just a few weekend nights you would be rich beyond imagination.

Mid week weddings aren't entirely uncommon, but they usually suck :embarrassed:

Given a bit of time, I could make the move to DJing full time if I really wanted to but I can't think of anything worse to be honest - this is my pressure release valve when the teaching is getting heavy, turning it into a job / my complete livelihood would suck.

I hear you. I like to tinker with cars. I like to renovate my home and house. I like to play guitar.

If I had to do any of the above for a full time job I think I would hate it having to do it all the time.

When we were students my brother and I set up a tourist pub crawl company in Glasgow.

Before we were unceremoniously shut down by the powers that be :embarrassed: I had an epiphany that if I was fed up of being paid really well to go into town, hang out in cool bars and clubs and drink with hot Aussie birds, ANYTHING could become a job :grin:
