Attempting to learn his picking style is a challenge. He's got a very unique way of fingerpicking and the way he weaves it in. I've never been able to play his stuff the way he does.

i think part of that is that on a number of his songs, his picking 'timing' is different that his singing 'timing'
going to carolina, sweet baby james are both examples of that.
it messes with your head, trying to keep them both going but separated.

Yep. I sing and play, so when I learn someone's stuff, I get the guitar parts going first, but all the while I'm trying to get the singing parts in there, in my head. Then finally, I'll try both. I don't think I've ever gotten all the way through a JT song.

First time I ever heard "Carolina" it wasn't by James Taylor. I was 9 or 10, poking around the singles rack at a local 5&dime store. I was homesick, had just been uprooted to MO from my birthplace at Seymour Johnson and saw the title on the 45. It was from a band called Crystal Mansion.
