I am booked to play a wedding rehearsal dinner tonight with the calypso/soca/reggae band that I am a sub for. The main guy (who is a friend of mine going back 30 years) called me a few days ago to let me know that he was going in for some serious surgery this week and had to sub out or cancel of of his work for the next six weeks. I get to play the gig with a different steel drum player/singer and a percussionist that I've never met and will probably have a completely different book of music. Since these guys all use backing tracks for the smaller gigs the arrangements are pretty locked in so we'll see how it goes. Should all be good musicians, but I won't know the tunes or even the arrangements of the songs I do know. I hope the book has good charts.
 
The night actually went very well. The pan player ended up being someone I went to college with the first time around even though we didn’t really know each other back then. The percussionist was great, too. The only downer was that everyone is worried for our buddy.

I kind of knew you were going to be fine...you just finished a ridiculously demanding college degree program, your brain is still operating at a higher level...

If I may be so bold as to hypothesize, I think the amount of stress you've been under, both financially and with your new job, has your self-confidence shaken...try to relax a little, man, you're going to be just fine...I (and I think I can speak for all of us) have a lot of faith in you, Mark...
 
My band will throw songs at me I've never played (or heard in some cases) at gigs and I manage to get through.

Now, as best I can tell, you are immensely more talented and knowledgeable around the fretboard than I am. I had no doubt you were going to be fine.

There is a bit of that, but I'm also very aware that I essentially took a two decade long detour from the kinds of working gigs that my peers have been doing non-stop. I'm doing OK but I am hyper-aware of where my shortcomings are.

And I appreciate that you guys always have my back :)

Looks like a pretty nice venue! Hard to beat those SoCal beach views.

Mojo for your buddy. Hope he has a quick recovery.
