Interesting development with the Orange....

So I was messing about with my pedal board before and after this weekend's gig.... was kind of a pain in the ass thing where the Hall of Fame reverb didn't sound the way I wanted and I was debating returning it (but I already had Velcro on the bottom) and I put the Orange JR4 up on ebay.

Then... I realized that the original owner of the Orange had removed the covers and had swapped out the tubes.

Not wanting the buyer to claim that the amp was tinkered with I removed the auction as "broken/Missing/other" while I tracked down some new tube covers.



On a whim.... I plugged the HoF into the loop and plugged directly into the amp.

Hot damn.


So.... to summarize.... the Wampler Pinnacle sounds amazing into the front of the Fender... the Hall of Fame reverb... notsomuch.

Orange... had difficulty with pedals out front and sounds kinda harsh dry.... but add some reverb (and one more tube ) in the effects loop and fucking amazing.


Dammit.


At this point, my A/B/Y might end up being Fender/Orange/Both and I might have to replace the Mesa 1x12 with a 2x12 that I can patch each amp into one side or the other.

Update. You have to dial the pedals way back out front. The pseudo-Rockerverb preamp chain out front adds quite a bit of gain to the signal (even when you dial it clean) so adding traditional "stomp box" gain and you get mush. Dial it back to a more subtle boost and it's very usable.

Hmm.... Doesn't hurt to have two different kinds of amps for when I'm in a different mood.

Yeah, chances are I'll just do an eenie meenie to decide which head to use at any given night, and just stick with my 1x12 and the amp stand. Now I just have to figure out how to put the reverb pedal INSIDE the head and we're good to go.

Tinkering is half of the fun, yet fustrating at the sametime. Dialing a sound in takes time. Sadly when you finally get one dialed in, you are going to change something because now you are looking for another sound.

What's that Orange JR4? Pics? Never heard of it!

The JR4 is a member of the Orange Tiny Terror Family..... it's the Jim Root Signature amp. It's like a tiny terror in that it's a 15watt/7watt mini amp head... where it deviates is the preamp channel is closer to the Rockerverb series. It has two 12ax7 tubes and a 3 band EQ. The amp also has a tube powered effects loop which sweetens up the sound when it's added to the chain. I'm putting a TC Electronic Hall of Fame reverb in the loop and then running the amp to a Mesa Boogie Recto cabinet.
