Having played quite a bit of bass over the years, I can confirm that playing bass is almost all about listening, and very little about playing/technique in most settings.
You can easily get away with being somewhat sloppy timing wise as a guitar player, but never as a bass player.

It's also the most important instrument in any (normal) band imo.

I would argue for either drummer or singer. Either can carry a band. Either can break a band.

Well, we can't always agree on everything.

One point in my direction is Darryl Jones. The Stones actually got a bit better after he joined, and Charlie still has weird timing and Mick is...well, Mick.

I would do it, but then again, I used to make a living as a bass player. Mind you, it wasn't a very good living, but I did ok.

Why in THE PHOCK would you pass up an opportunity like that simply because of insecurity about your ability?

Call them back RIGHT NOW and accept the offer.

Look at me, I am, at best.. a 3rd rate hack of a musician. Despite the kind compliments from the folks here about my abilities, I know that this forum is populated almost entirely by guys with more skills, better understanding of theory, better technique etc than my own. I am constantly humbled by acceptance I get here in light of my musical shortcomings.

However, I have spent the last 20 years working in studios and live environments with an incredible array of bona fide, legendary musicians. That was only made possible because I took a chance and followed through on an invitation from one of my heroes to join them in the studio. I pinch myself everyday and thank my lucky stars that my life has turned out the way it has. I am exceptionally blessed.

I still suck at playing guitar.

I'd be willing to bet that your skill level is higher than mine. Quit selling yourself short and GO GET IT!

if it ever comes up again, sign on for how ever long it lasts. What you learn from the experience will make you a better player. Playing with musicians that are better than you will always elevate your game, if not in the moment, then as you aply what you learned form them.
