One more just because it was funny at the time. I don't know how many of you remember the DHL delivery truck commercials in the late 80's, but the had DHL trucks that showed up at the most outrageous places. We all liked this shot because the reflection on the aft flight deck window resembels a DHL truck.

Hey Steverino/335clone, what do you guys think of operations like SpaceX? I'm guessing the commercialism of spaceflight isn't quite up to speed yet, but would that be a viable option to pursue for guys in your line of work?

These are so awesome. I think deep down we all dream about going to those outer reaches and just being on the other side of danger and seeing just how cool it looks.

I still haven't seen the aurora borealis. On my list!

I doubt I'll get back in the business. SpaceX has promise, but we'll see how that all goes. They may be a private company but as NASA's fortunes go so will theirs. If NASA loses major funding I doubt that SpaceX has the ability to take it on themselves.

These pics just blow me away.


I've been a fan of the Space Program since before I could walk.

There are pictures of me as a baby climbing the TV on the stand so I could get a closer look at space missions on TV.... in elementary school I was really into all the space missions going on including the Apollo/Soyez link up and built this really detailed model of the ships.

As I got older, I followed the Shuttle program with great intensity... watching the original Enterprise as it piggy backed on a 747.

It really saddened me when they decided to retire the shuttles without the new X-crafts being anywhere near production-level.

It saddens me that this generation of kids has all this amazing technology available in their phones and video games, but won't see any elaborate expansion of the International Space Station or any big push to get to Mars. :cry:

I really wish a couple of the world's mutli-billionares like Gates or Oprah or hell... maybe even a Florida Sports team... would invest a bunch of money into NASA.

It's one of the biggest reasons I really want to go watch a space shuttle launch this year. It just boggles my mind that it may be the last few times in my lifetime that we will have manned sapceships leave from this part of the world, and I may never have gotten to see one.

I just went to one back in November. It was an awesome experience. Here is a picture I snapped with my phone. This was taken from the Titusville pier, maybe about 9 miles from the launch pad.

My particular line of work does not have to be with Nasa. Personally, I've always thought the luckiest people in the world were those who enjoyed their jobs, and I've loved this place since I've been here. SpaceX is in CA, so that'd be out for me. I really wonder how private companies will be able to deal with putting astronauts into space and all that's associated with it. I guess the bright side would that many of these small private companies are ex-Nasa folks so they'd know how to get the job done without the government red tape.
 
If anyone has the oportunity to experience a launch, do it. While I was there I got to see 3 shuttle launches and a half dozen Deltas. There is nothing more awesome than a night launch,which one of the 3 were. I was on base at Cape Canaveral AFB on the causeway between the Cape and Merrit Island where KSC is located. We were right on the water.

Not my video, but same place...



It's so weird watching the completely silent launch, then feeling and hearing the roar build and build. By the time the sound gets to you, the shuttle is gone.
