I leave for army basic training in less than a week

Chiming in. Good look on your basic training.

And speaking as one who's been in a pretty consistent training program since last fall it's not bad to gain weight with muscle because unlike fat,
muscle uses energy and keeps your metabolism going. Fat just sits there and does nothing.

I'd lost weight before but right now I'm about 30 pounds away from my goal and I'm fitting into pants I should not be able to fit into until I lose
another 20 pounds. I'm more fit - conditioned.

This will likely do wonders for your general fitness - if you survive!

They probably won't let you have internet access for the next month or so, but be sure to get back to us and let us know how that's goin'.

Probably no net access until basic is over at the least. None in AIT either for the most part.

And I'm willing to wager you lose at least 10 pounds - probably more like 15. Remember to drink a butt load of water - especially as you head into May and June. You will sweat like a Mofo. Georgia in the summer is not a fun place between about 9:30AM and 7:30PM. I did field exercise in the middle of Georgia in June and it was an experience I have not forgotten.

The main thing is this - you can do this. About ten times a day for the first couple of weeks you will be convinced you can't, but remember that thousands of men and women have already made it through and you most certainly can to. Keep you eyes and ear open, and you mouth shut except when spoken to. Your attitude will have a lot to do with how well you weather the next few months. Keep a positive mindset and it won't be so bad.
