I gotta move
When your shack gets shitty, you gotta move.

Longer term, I would like to move out of the country altogether, but I should probably stay midwesty for the next year to find my feet. That said, if anybody, anywhere, needs a house-sitter for more than a few months, has an empty gimp shack, whatever, let me know for real. I have a high credit score and would have no problem paying rent at the lower end of the spectrum, but my income is not great, so I would like to avoid super formal/rigorous application processes. I really don't want to do roomies though, so probably not doing myself any favors there. Don't want to be car dependent either so that's another limiting factor. Finding something feasible in Shitcagoland seems like a pipe dream but maybe craiglist isn't the whole picture. Dunno.

Would add more particulars but if I get going I'll still be here in two hours. Been putting this off for a long time and for various reasons in spite of wanting to gtfo, but now it's a practical necessity. If anybody has anything helpful, great; if not, I was just thinking aloud *spits*.
 
There is a tool shack in myt backyard but not midwesty it is dry though except for when it rains, also might have some spiders/webs/piossible roaches in it. We have a couple shipping containers and big rig trailers at my work and my boss is a laid back hippie like dude so you could probably pay him like 100 a month but they are full of old auto parts/recording equipment, and random stuff...again they are dry and even when it does rain...

Have you considered selling the Meap and getting like a sprinter van or a long wheelbase Chevy workvan and turningit into teh #vanylyfeoutofnecessity rather than #thevanlyfelookatmemakinganinstagrampourovercoffeeinfrontofanationalparklyfe ? I'm being serious here because for you and your work you could totally do it but rather than driving all over just hit up places for a couple weeks at a time and minimise travel. This has crossed my mind except I'm old and have two dogs but lately we have been slow slow at work (although I think my boss is in for the long haul and he's one of those frugal has amillion buchs but looks lives like he's on welfare dudes) so it has crossed my mind except I have no way to make income like you so I'd be stuck working at Target or landscsaping or something tethered to a town or city which would suck...I'm just counting on the future inheritence(S) to hopefully get me out of the rat race early or at least on time and live a peasant likes imple life, I've had enough of this shit.

Keep in mind that rents all over the country are currently way higher than what they should be( for instance Tuscan has what used to be a 700 dollar a month single room now goes for like 1100 on average and it's surounded by crack houses....no joke) unless you go to bumfuck Kansas or whatchamacall it anytown USA with a pop. of 34 but then where you gonna get internet to do your work.
 
I’ll keep my ears peeled and my eye to the ground. I’mma be in Chambana a bit for work on and off summer through fall and I’ll let you know if I discover anything there. Also, I can inquire about things in The Chuck.

A buddy of mine did some full service dog/house sitting for a bit in The Big Shit, so I’ll see if he has any leads/tips.

I live in Bumfuck Illinois. Houses are cheap so, I'd assume rent is too but, it's very car dependent.
 
I'll keep my eyes open. If you can share your rent budget with me, it would be easier to find something.
 
Yea, housing is too damn high everywhere except the boonies with no place to earn a living and an hour commute to buy groceries.
Even here in Alabamastan. My 2007 $180,000 McMansion is probably worth $280,000 right now. Hell 1200 sq ft 50 yr old ranchers are going for $150,000 and 5 years ago you could get a decent one for $80,000-$90,000. 5 yrs ago you could rent in my small town for $400-$600 mo. Now you aint gonna find anything under $1000, even a dumpy old mobile home.
 
I'll be moving out of a (moderately shitty but livable) 1 bdrm at some point (probably early July?) if you're interested in a $980/mo sublet on the north side of Chicago. You could live in the very same apartment that Dart has farted in!

I can contact the rental company to find out details of the application process for a sublet (ie if you have to apply to them using the same process I did, or if you apply to me using whatever process I want; ie any fan of Brocktoon is accepted, non-fans get put into big jars)

A 1200 sq ft 50 yr old rancher here would likely sell in excess of $400K, depending on the area. We just had to pay stupid money fpr the house we just bought. If, IF we move again it will likely be some place way cheaper after I retire. If cheaper exists by then. We could move to the boonies then.

I would imagine if they know you are moving out that they would be looking to cash in on the gifthorse right now and raise thatr rent. 980 a month in Chicago seems way too cheap but then again are people moving to Chitown in droves ? i was looking at Tucson reddit this morning and already know everyone seems to be moving here from California (WA and Portland also seem to be popular) I noticed the vast majority this morning were coming (or already moved here) from Michigan and a few from Ohio but anyway I would think they would rent your out to the next person at like 1200 or so.

This would be (I was mostly posting as a goof, I don't think he would want to leave here) a sublet, not a new lease (until next Feb), so the rent would stay the same until at least then. Also, like I said it's a moderately shitty apartment, in a fairly low rent, scruffy-around-the-edges neighborhood, so ~$1k is slightly on the low end but more-or-less par for a 1 bedroom (that allows dogs). Rents are definitely going up in Chicago (like everywhere), but it's still very dependent on neighborhood. Going rate for a 1 bedroom down in the loop is probably more like ~$2500.

It's interesting they allow sublet, most don't That sounds great for Theodore though. Tucson is laid out so that you might have a super nice neighborhood immediatly next to a meth area , there really is no buffer zones here other than the super mega foothills area and a couple others all situated basically in the foothills so they can look down on the rest of us *spits* but otherwise throughout town it's all mixed .

Chicago actually has pretty good tenant ordinances; among other things, subletting is mandated to always be allowed

Interesting. Even if he doesn't want Chicago, you could still "threaten" to sublet, thus delaying them from getting more rent from a new tenant, if say, they were going to ding you for not staying till the end of the lease.

No desire to buy another vehicle let alone live out of one. I pretty much have PTSD and probably several health conditions from living here. I want some good sleep and some good showers. The best option $ wise that I've considered would be a long-term airbnb in Mexico, but I'm wary of making that big of a change after 20 years. I need to sort everything out literally and figuratively.

Tuckson is a place everybody moves to though. You'll be down to one glass of water for everybody and half of California and Chicago and New York will still move there for the vibes or whatever. It's not gangbusters but I do see places on craigs that would be fine for a year, just nothing that makes one place a lot more attractive than another. I do gravitate towards some place significantly bigger though.

I hope you find an alternative to wrenching but Paul McCartney and half of Tuxson is leaving you their estate from what I've heard. :cop:
