I co-teach a blues guitar masterclass with Tommy Harkenrider Tuesday nights. Tonight he wasn't here so I had to do the class by myself so after a few minutes of following what we had told the students class was going to be about I changed my mind and decided to plug my bass into the looper and record some basslines...we did a 12 bar box shuffle, a 12 bar boogaloo and a 60's memphis style R&B feel ala Midnight Hour. I recorded each bassline and then sat down at the drums. I could start the looper on the downbeat of a bar with my left foot and my right foot could play the downbeat on the kick drum and right hand on the hi hat or ride cymbal to get the groove going. The students got to play both the top and bottom rhythm parts together while I was the whole rhythm section :)

Getting the whole band feel, rather than feeling like you're practicing alone . . . priceless!

The class is really supposed to be about teaching guitarists to play blues in a duo setting before moving to a full band thing at this point but since Tom wasn't there I decided to do something different. Most of these guys have been in the full band class but they dug doing the new class material with a rhythm section too so I guess it was successful :)
 
Yep. Loopers can be a lot of fun for their usual purpose but they are also terrific for nailing parts.

Record a bass line for a guitar part you want to practice over and you can practice it until the looper runs out of juice. You won't get "I'm so bored playing this part over and over" either.

I do this. Best to do it when no one is around though - drives "normal" people crazy!
