How do you dirt?

Just through my DV Jazz it sounds pretty cool. I'll crank it up with my Deluxe in a few hours:

a bit of explanation of the controls:

Timbre controls the amount of treble frequencies being clipped, texture controls secondary harmonic content, or "hard" clipping. Think of the drive as an OD, the texture as a distortion blend.

The more texture, the more "rawk"

For overdrive I mostly use the Drive channel on my H&K Statesman. If I want to add some extra snarl, I turn on the Klone.
Also I use two pedals on the clean channel - a Washburn Soloist Distortion for a 90s Marshall crunch or a MI Audio Neo Fuzz.

I have a whole bunch of dirt pedals sitting in my closet, though. I have been considering wiring up a patch bay or something to do quick comparisons.

Not my pics but...

  • For clean boost to low-gain...Analogman TS-9/808 Mod (must be 20 years old by now)
  • For medium to high gain...Menatone Kar Krash v1
  • Fuzz...this flips between an old Sovtek Green Big Muff and some scratch-built fuzz face with odd transistors I bough off Analogman in the '90's
I've had the Analogmn TS-9 and the Fuzz Face for a solid 20 years now, the Sovtek since it was new ('91-'92?), so I'm a creature of habit. Only the Kar Krash is relatively recent.

Zen Drive and Euphoria.... Pretty much the same? Humm?

Ok... So lemme see... I haven't finished the board yet so I'm unclear on the directions I can and want to go. Here are thoughts:

TS10 - Low Gain
Blues Crab (Mooer Bluesbreaker with an awful name) - I haven't found a setting I care for much.
Wampler Ecstasy - Low to Mid Gain
Klon Klone (Homebrew) - I like this more mid to high gain and the volume rolled off, but plays well low gain.
Super Hornet - Gary Clark Jr thick fuzz...
Modded OS-2 - Marshall-in-a-box
Modded DS-1 - Marshall-in-a-box with less balls.
Katana Clone (Homebrew) - More of the aforementioned.

It's basically a souped up Tube Screamer with a wider tonal range and a built in boost circuit...the boost circuit is really good and works independent of the drive...

Good pedal, but not what I need on my board at the moment...but also worth keeping in reserve...

That's my evaluation of it as well. I like the crap out of its boost and keep it on the board (but mostly disconnected from the chain) just so I use that sweet boost every now and then.

My dirt mostly comes from my amps, a Fulldrive 2 Mosfet and the excellent Providence Heat Blaster I got in the Premier Guitar Mystery Stocking. Oh, and the Soul Food side of the EHX Turnip Greens every once in a while.

The Soul Food is so good. I love it.
