How did INXS kick have so many hits

They had some pretty good success with Shabooh Shoobah years before Kick, the movie Reckless also gave it some decent exposure. I still have the 45’s/LP.

I remember Don’t Change but not the other one.

But this is a good demonstration that lesser hair = lesser hits

I wasn't that into them back in the day. They definitely knew how to churn out the hits though.

Saw them on when they first came to NA opening for Men at Work. No one at the concert knew who they were and almost no one cared since they wanted to see M@W. IMO they blew M@W off the stage, they were

I also saw them during their first tour with a small audience (May 6, 1983, Cain’s Ballroom, Tulsa). They were the only act. It remains one of the best concerts I’ve experienced.

Never liked them. All the videos looked the same, with Mr Hutchence kind of running into the camera. I suppose the songs were ok but they were played to death and to this day, if I hear an INXS song on the radio I change stations

Yeah. INXS made their live debut on 16th August 1977 (the day Elvis died), and Hutchence died in 1997. If they hadn't reached their potential in those 20 years then I don't think they were ever going to reach it.

During that era it didn’t matter whatever else kind of music you were into, it was hard to not like that album because all the tunes were so catchy/melodic/relatable/danceable and the videos were in constant rotation on MTV. It all came together perfectly for INXS on that album, it’s definitely a great one…for me being in college during that time it’s pretty nostalgic.

I think it really is one of those rare things that they were right place, right time, right product and that product was top tier to boot. Also, his hair is magical.

I was kind of including the years where Hutchence really struggled with his demons before succumbing to them as part of them not reaching their potential.

Otherwise, I could have seen them being a band that could have continued playing until today and potentially finding a new, younger, audience as IMO their sound was a bit ahead of the times when released

I guess it depends where you were. What You Need, This Time, Don’t Change, Listen Like Thieves, Original Sin, and The One Thing were all on heavy rotation on WHFS in DC.

I remember seeing "The One Thing" video on MTV early and enjoying their stuff ever since. The Swing album was rather derivative, but Listen Like Thieves is prolly my favorite album from the band. Kick and X are great albums, but then my tastes moved away from pop for a while.

I think they were a great band, that had a crazy good mid-career run before Hutchinson's accident and death.
