Duller than cardboard
I did a thing. I've got four guitars with P90s and the Guild always sounded the least good of the bunch, and it's significantly noisier than the other three too.

It turns out TV Jones makes soapbar-sized Classics and Power'Trons. Who knew?

I'll update in a few weeks when they've arrived and been installed.

My Gretsch 6128 is a Power Jet so I'm familiar with the Power'Trons. But Gretsch's wacky wiring and absence of a proper tone control means the Guild should probably offer a more useful range of control. I'm optimistic.
 
Transformation complete! I've only had a few minutes to strum it a couple of times but this is a wildly different sounding guitar now and my first impression is that's a very good thing.

I kinda like the 'Tron aesthetics better for this guitar too.

Looks great, and I'm sure it sounds great too.

When you've had a few more hours on it let us know how you'd describe the 'before and after' tones. :thu:
 
Those Blues 90s originally sold with cream Duncans, but I bought mine at a guitar show in Nashville and the pickups had already been swapped. I was told they were Rio Grandes and that was good enough for me. The guitar was sexy and played great so we did the deal. I played it for 17 years exactly the way I purchased it but it never sounded as good as my other P90 equipped guitars.

Yesterday I learned that my frustration with the sound wasn't just my imagination. My tech told me he found a 1k pot at the bridge and some other wiring issue with the neck PU.

So that's a little frustrating. It was the victim of hack-job wiring and I never heard what it actually sounded like with P90s properly set up.

That sucks. Anytime I buy a guitar that says the pickups were swapped, I always pop the hood to check the wiring. The SG I had, the guy did a great job replacing the pickups and wiring.
