It's an all time favorite of mine. I really don't care for Benson's "pop" albums at all (and I'm the last one to begrudge someone like George or Wes Montgomery a paycheck for doing albums like that) but they are just not my thing.

Counterintuitively, a jazz program that ignores 1970-2000 is probably more current than that does't. In most instances, and depending on who's teaching.

It just is what it is at this point. I've got ears and access to the internet so I can find a lot fo what i'm interested in at this point. I need an actual degree to work and honestly having my chops busted over Bebop and 60's jazz is not the worst thing for me at this point in my career.

And I guess part of your point is that people are playing more in that style these days than in anything newer (at least around here) so it's actually more "current" in that regard.

Well, be aware... For a long time, the main influence of the 70s was fusion, which is basically dead, at this point, except for guitar nerds.

The influence of the 70s avant-garde is pretty huge, currently.

Not exactly, but yeah.

Either way, you're missing out on the past 15 years or so.

But reading a few books on spectral music will get you closer than playing 'Spain' ever again.

Yes, this is my point. This is 45 year-old stuff that jazz educators have been inconsistent in dealing with. I think it's getting better, though.
