Just finished Taxi Driver : Grade: A

Great movie. I really enjoyed it, great characters, good ending, and keeps you interested even at around 2 hours. Not really a bust 'em up, explosion riddled, awesome stunt, 'holy shit', type of guy movie. But dark enough that I can't see it being too many women's cup of tea.

Next up: Cool Hand Luke

Hombre - one of my all time favorite Paul Newman movies. Richard Boone makes a terrific bad guy. Also stars a former Mrs. Sean Connery, Diane Cilento.
 
Cool Hand Luke : Grade: A+

Now, THAT is a good movie. Instanly one of my all time favorites. Nothing much more I can say about that.
 
There is a movie that I saw a long time ago called "Duel" by Steven Spielberg. Check it out it's a very neat suspense/thriller flick.

And movies are worse today because they have it down to a formula. The studios know how to make a blockbuster and exactly what to put in a movie to make it sell. It's sad that most super mega corporations treat us like cattle. It's even worse that we act like cattle.

After watching Bullitt and now this in the past couple days I'm finding older drama/action movies are really suspenseful to watch. And the reason I believe is this; Newer movies are so predictable. I can watch 30 minutes of just about any movie that came out in the past decade and know exactly what's going to happen. And even if there is a 'surprise twist' that I don't know, I at least can predict the forcoming presence of a 'surprise twist' and can start guessing as to what it will be.

In older movies the 'rules' are different. It's not plotted like a high school essay (introduction that explains the whole movie, cool shit in the middle, ending that nicely wraps everything up). When danger, or mystery, or conflict presents itself in an older movie I can't automatically assume it's building to a climax, sometimes it just dies. When 'impending doom' music is playing, sometimes nothing happens.

Does anyone know wtf I'm talking about? It's really a breath of fresh air, to be honest.

I agree. The predictability of most modern movies make it hard for me to get excited about many of them.
 
IDK...a lot of the movies mentioned are older flicks that if your only point of reference is movies from the past 5-10 years, are just too different and don't have the same type of effects, pacing, editing, etc to keep most people's short attention span. You kinda need to be aware of the context of when they were made and how they compare with their contemporaries. Some are pretty timeless.

I saw Boondock Saints when it first went basically straight to video...a couple friends and I grabbed it because the cover looked decent and there was nothing else new. I remember at the time I had just seen Fishing with John and Wild at Heart so Dafoe was a running theme so it was entertaining. Went back and watched it again about two years ago and it just didn't hold up; cheese. They did a documentary about the guy who wrote the film and his struggles with being a massive asshole in Hollywood while trying to produce the movie that's definitely worth watching:

I managed to avoid it until last year when some friends of mine hosted some Irish-y-ish movie night thing (I know, I know) and decided on Boondock Saints. These were grown-ups, mind you, who should have known better. The same people were also involved in my first trip to a Renaissance fair in over two decades. Hmm...
