GFS LP kit for Zemmy

So a while back we were all wondering about the quality of the GFS kits and I said that if one of our close buddies (Zemmy) from Harmony bought a kit, that I would build it. It seemed like a good way for me to get into a set neck build and an LP style guitar for cheap. We replaced the pups with BG smokestacks and the tuners are Grovers and the nut is tusq xl the knobs are speed and so on. I will try to post just the pics necesarry to show the progress.

When the kit came to the house...

The name of this guitar is purple passion and I started it with a hard dose of blue dye from stew mac.

Then I mixed some purple and might have hit it with some red too...can't remember if I did plain red or a very reddish purple and then a real purple:facepalm:

Zemmy wanted horns for the headstock, which was good practice for cutting a nice shape for someone that I had to do from scratch with no templates or designs before hand

I wanted as close to a raw neck on this as possible and sanded back alot of the stain and tung oiled it, the stain is all minwax and the last color ended up being the darkest stain that I could get and alot of the inbetween stages are mixed up from different stains. The clear, once we get there, is Deft Nitro.

This is where the back took a new direction. I wanted something that looked like old wood, not relic'd so much as old. This took some messing with, but I looooovvvveee the way it came out.

Some of my kids magin markers, purple in the dark of the grain and pink in the lighter, really made the top "pop"

I did not do any filler on this top, I wanted to feel and see the grain through the clear. It is really cool and has the texture that i wanted.

I did a henna tattoo like cover design to make the cheap plastic covers look like something more fitting.

Yes, safely migrated to our summer home to reproduce...I am a sipper with good whiskey, that lasted like a whole half hour between my father, little brother, and I durring a jam party...but it was quite tastey. Morning Ray.
 
I really like how you didn't use any grain filler. One of my favorite "non-musical" things about my older guitars is how you can feel the wood under the finish...

Some people tried to explain the used of grain filler, and I said, I meant to do that...I think it just works for some people and not at alll for others.
