For your guitar sound, do you like it wet or dry?

I see the act of amplifying a guitar as processing. Anything that's added to change the clean signal is an effect. Therefore, the distortion that happens when turning up an amp is an effect. So are other forms of compression. We rarely hear un-effected guitar sounds.

Now if you want to call compression and EQ dry, and all other effects wet, then go for it. But to me, it's an unnecessary categorization.

If one says "I see the act of amplifying a guitar as processing." then all amplifiers are an effect - hence all signals are wet. With that said, only the acoustics of a guitar - whether solid or hollow body - would be the clean signal.

As for compression, all amplified signals have some sort of compression. Some more prominent than others especially at higher volume levels.

As for EQ, those are just tone controls contouring the shape of the signal.

Everything mentioned above has been about effects or reshaping of a signal but none of them change that ambiance or the spatial outcome of what one perceives.
