Which is your favourite?..I actually like the American Standard best..and that's what I own strangely enough..:embarrassed:

Based on my extremely positive experience with my Roadworn 50s telecaster w. maple fingerboard, I'd probably go that route if I was in the market for a strat, given that the ones I've played have been very nice, and I've read some very nice comments about them here and at GJ.

Oddly enough, my favorite strat player is probably Ry Cooder, whose strats look like abominations but sound like angels.

On second listening, I'm really enjoying the sound of the roadworn too...this is how I'm hearing them btw:

1) MIM Standard - Don't like..something over compressed about the sound to me..over and above the norm for a vid that is..probably the pickups to blame.
2) Road Worn - Very, very nice, open sounding and reacts to the overdrive nicely.
3) Classic Player - I've played one of these, and they are nice, the 12" radius neck is cool..but it is too "plinky" for my tastes, not enough balls. :embarrassed:
4) American Special - The bridge HB changes the game obviously, nothing grabbed me overall...the Texas Specials are a bit sharp for me.
5) USA Standard - Excellent, balanced sound, great with distortion. Hence, my favourite :embarrassed:
 
That's interesting. I absolutly hate the sound of my American Standard. It's a '07 one of the last ones made before they updated the USA line in '08. I'm not sure if that is a factor or not. If it wasn't so good looking I would have sold it two years ago, but instead it hangs on my wall unplayed. It is the worse sounding guitar I own, it just doesn't make sense. I'm trying to decide wether to install BG V60's or S90's to try to salvage the guitar.

I'm in the same boat. My American Standard sounds like poo to me. Plus, the middle pickup is in the way of my strum, and I'm always hitting the damn volume knob. I'm this close to selling it and getting a Blacktop Strat or a Charvel So Cal (if I can scrape together that much cash).

I have my middle pickup flush with the pickguard..never use the in-between positions in fact. Probably should do a Blackmore and disconnect it completely. :embarrassed:

We might both have Charvel So Cals in the not too distant future then :wink:

It's a big if--they're a bit more spendy than I usually go for. But I'm just absolutely in lust with this:

I liked the first MIM blue strat and the last white American standard strats the best.

I've a bit of a longing for the green one too. But it's a little more expensive, I believe, and I fear it's also a tad too '80s.
 
Hmmmm.......

I did like the tone a lot from the Road Worn Strat, but I won't buy one on principle. Both the HSS and the American Standard sounded good too. I used to have a limited edition version of the Players Deluxe Strat, and among the reasons I sold it was the pickups. Sterile and soulless. The MIM Standard sounded about like you would think - decent tone.
 
Back when I was last strat shopping (about 7 or 8 years ago), I was more impressed with the sound of the the Highway 1 over the Am Std.

The road worn has two major faults IMO. It does sound great, but it has a 7.25" radius. Vintage spec I could live with that. Fault number two and by far the deal killer, the neck must be removed to make a truss rod adjustment. Vintage spec too, but seriously at least make it a practical instrument too own and play.
 
I think that Road Worn sounds great. Don't like the relic thing or the 7.25, but tone says "Strat" to me.
