Ever went to set up at a gig and another band's stuff is set up?

So the place we were playing tonight has a weird setup with the stage behind the bar, requiring you to set up in the afternoon so you're not carting gear through when they're busy.

I show up to set up equipment and another local act's stuff is set up. :messedup:

The manager thought that we were "tenative and your guy never called me back" but after my drummer arrived and the details of the phone conversations were replayed, it was ironed out (ie: the manager forgot to write it down) and we're now rescheduled for next month.

(as an aside, the drummer had people coming in from out of town to see us, so he called back a place that wanted us before but we were booked solid, so now we have a NEW gig tonight at another venue).


Anyways.... in all the years I've been doing this, It's only ever happened one other time, and that one was I was booked by the Manager (not on site) and the bartender booked one of his friends. Still a pain when you're loaded with gear and you drive to a venue only to turn around again.

Anyone else?
 
Yeah, a few years back I was booked at a club; when we went in another group was setting up. The booking guy admitted to screwing up. I alternated sets with the other act and they paid us both.
 
If the stage was bigger at this place, we would have done that... but there's no way... it's a tiny tiny stage.

Yeah, we were both solo acts. The place didn't have a stage but we set up in different places so we could go seamlessly from one set to another.
 
A friend of a friend played with Katy Perry before she had a deal. One day the band showed up for soundcheck at the Key Club in Hollywood to find their replacements soundchecking already :embarrassed:
 
I have been on both sides of that fence. It's no fun when a pissed off band is telling your band that we"stole ' the gig either
 
One minute before downbeat tonight a guy ran in carrying his amp and freaked out when he saw us set up and ready to go. Turns out his band is playing tomorrow night but he was the first one to show up 60
Seconds before they were supposed to be playing if they were on the right night so in assuming they were the ones who can't read a calendar or clock.
 
Only happened to me whilst DJing once on Christmas Eve.

Turned up to a hotel in Bridge of Allan (a good 30+ miles away) to be told there was already someone there. Phoned the boss of my agency and he told me I had the night off and I got paid full rate @ double time too. Made it back down the road in time to catch all the craziness in my local's big Xmas Eve party. :grin:

Strangely enough my girlfriend and I were staying at a spa place not a million miles away from Bridge of Allan last weekend when I bumped into a history colleague from another school. He was at a conference for the qualifications authority and had turned up to that same hotel to be told they'd double booked his room :shrug:
 
Without trying to sidetrack too much.... you mention double booking and it made me think of how common it is to overbook an airplane flight. What the fuck.... seriously. How often do you book a flight and then decide to just not go? Are they counting on flights to always be fucked up and someone to miss a connection? Are they counting on flights to always be overbooked and fuck up connections?

It's like that Seinfeld bit "It's easy for you to take the reservation... but what you need to do is keeeep the reservation." :gah:
 
We've had the pleasure of going back home because whoever ran the bar was drunk when he booked us and forgot about it.
We later that night called the local bar, did an on-the-fly gig playing for the door drawing about 150 people in a matter of 4 hours. Win. :grin:
 
I shown up and seen other bands equipment already set up on a few occasions.

I think on at least one occasion, the manager went ahead and paid us anyway.
 
Almost freaked out when I saw another musician I know scheduled for tonight at the same venue we're playing. :messedup:

He's playing a solo 5-7 set and we're playing the full band 9 - 12 set.
 
It's happened to me probably 3 or 4 times. It sucks. We usually work something out with the other band to split the time slot.

We've had a guy who thought he had a night booked, while we we listed on the website and venue literature, and had posters up all over the place. He backed down pretty quick when it was clear he was about to make a fool of himself with the booker, as that is what happens when you ASSume. We felt pretty bad, as he was planning to share the night with a touring singer-songwriter who was out of a gig that night.
 
Funny as this just happened tonight....

I get a call from the guy who booked the gig for his band letting me know not to come down tonight. For some reason, somebody called on Thursday saying they represented that band and cancelled the gig. My friend who runs the band and booked the gig and can't figure it out as he would have been the only one to cancel the gig. As for me, I was about 3 miles from home when I found out.
