Yeah, comparable products differing by degrees. I prefer SD, but I know a ton of guy on either side.

what sort of sound are you after? Both companies would make something you'd want.
I'm kinda a van halen fan but I've got two VH guitars. I've looked at tone zone , sreamin demon, Frankenstein, seymore custom custom for the bridge

I'm a true blue Dimarzio fan here, but both companies make great pickups. Depends on what you're after, as noted, they both make a pup for just about anything.

Steve's Special in the bridge and a PAF 36 in the neck is hard to beat for a solid do all setup in my experience.

the hottest i've gone is an Air Norton in the neck and Andy Timmons in the bridge. i didn't think i'd like a pickup as hot as the Timmons, but here we are. great articulation at high gain and actually cleans up well.

Im a A Duncan guy but its just a personal preference thing. Both make good pickups.

I've used just about all of them sans the last half dozen models, which I think are all Petrucci, they gave him a free pass.

The X2N was my baby for years, and that was, for like 15 years, the hottest passive pup out there. I'm over that kinda stuff now.

Steve's Special is their real underdog, but it has a following for a reason. It's just hot enough to classify it as hot, just to the edge of pup overdrive without quite getting there, and really open and expressive. It's like a toned down Evo without being so spiky. And the PAF 36 is arguably the single greatest neck humbucker to be released from anyone in decades. That thing is infallible.

I've had many Dimarzzio's over the years. Always solid, yet somewhat limited. They thrive on high gain stuff but for cleans, they aren't the greatest. Not much experience with Duncan, but the one in the old Aria I bought recently sounds amazing both clean, and with serious br00talz applied.

So, my answer isn't of any help at all.

You're welcome. :-P

Dimarzios always seem more distorted to me than duncans. I don't quite get how a magnet and wire can sound that much different from one make to the next other than the number of windings and type of magnet but I've had much better luck with Duncans across the board. The only guitars I haven't used duncans were a few PRS pickups and some proprietary pickups but other than that I almost always swap out the factory pickups for duncans.

They both make really good pickups. I usually go with Duncans when I swap out pickups. Just really a personal preference.

I think, at least, part of that is in your head, and I don't mean you personally, but collectively.

Dimarzio has a rep as the passive producer of "metal and shred" pickups, and to a point, good reason, considering all their big artists are in the metal/shred category. That same thing affected me for years and years. Personally, i've come to the realization that you like what you like based on personal preference, that goes without saying really, but opening yourself to consider that maybe that "metal" pickup works great for other types of music really opens your ears through your mind, if that makes any sense to anyone.

I am a fanboy of almost no one, but one of Dimarzio, so take my opinions with a grain of salt.

No wrong answer. I was a Dimarzio lifer from 85-05, but have been somewhat converted to SD since then. Both companies make excellent products.

I believe I'm gonna go with something like this with the Seymour custom 78's set

I've had good results with both, but have a preference for SD generally probably because when I was in the habit of regularly swapping out pickups, I found the '59, JB or Hot Rails worked really well for me in most guitars.

i still haven't played one. i have the Virtual PAF in my PRS and old Ibanez. at some point i'd like to get a comparison to the 36th, but those pickups sound great and see no reason to swap.

They both make some great pickups. I don't have a preference for one brand over the other.
