It's a 2011 and was getting pretty darned slow (on purpose?).

Now I have neither a PC nor a Mac. Posting this from my phone.

My question is: what would you guys recommend getting, these days? I dont need to be playing the latest FPS game, but I wouldn't mind getting something that can play at least some games. Like Neverwinter Nights-style games, or strategy games and similar.

Thinking of maybe a Windows laptop. Any good deals out there? Looks like Dell has a decent laptop range that starts at $900. It's one of Cnet's top picks. Anything else I should look at?

I recently got a 2020 touchbar mac (not the M1 chip) after breaking my 2015.

I'm not an apple fanboy but Ive no reason to go back to windows - we use it in work and it's just a clunkier and less user friendly or intuitive.

The new M1 macbooks are meant to have great performance and, I dunno exact prices, but are pretty reasonably priced.

I think it would depend how much you are into the apple ecosystem. Myself is too deep...apple music, apple news, iphone, iPad, iCloud and I've been Apple since about 2006 so I would just stick with Apple if it were me.

Be careful with Dell laptops. The charger they use has a little round end that is guaranteed to break within 6 months. I don't understand why there hasn't been any advancement in charging cables this century.

If you want a Windows laptop, I would recommend one of the business-class Lenovos. They tend to be pretty bullet-proof and don't come loaded with a bunch of bloatware. If you want an Apple, can't help too much, since the only mac we have is an 21.5"

my 2012 MBP needs new thermal paste; those intel chipsets run hot (especially if you have an i7) and the thermal compound that is on the cooling unit is really only good for five-six years before a new application is recommended. You might be able to do it yourself or have a notebook repair place do it nearby. The new M1 Macbooks (or better still, the Mac Mini if you don't NEED a laptop) is on my shortlist to replace my 2009 imac (which did get upgraded to an SSD and max ram for about $150, which increases it's lifespan for casual use). I don't really have any non gaming PC specific recommendations, so repair your MBP or look at an M1?
