Stealing Your Riffs
….or bears might use it…..

Raccoons too.

I was walking the dog this morning and a woman was driving down the street telling everyone that there was a bear in the neighborhood. No shit lady. We live right next to the Rockies and it’s trash day. And I did not see the bear.

Turns out black bears like candy bars.

They occasionally kill people, but that’s rare.

It bothers me that we just assume a bear does not have a legitimate reason for killing a person. Maybe, the bear was hungry. Maybe, the person used a shampoo that smelled like honey. Maybe, they had a candy bar in their pocket. Or even worse, maybe they were out of candy bars. I’m stocking up on candy bars just in case.

On Friday, July 24, 2026, first responders were called after a 57-year-old man was found unconscious inside his travel trailer in western Boulder County near Beaver Reservoir, Colorado. The trailer door had been ripped completely off its hinges, food was scattered throughout the trailer, and bear paw prints were found inside.

Because of the damage and the man’s condition, investigators initially had to consider whether the bear had attacked him. After their investigation, authorities determined that the man had actually suffered a pre-existing medical emergency and had already lost consciousness before the bear entered the trailer. There was no evidence that the bear injured him.

Investigators believe the bear was attracted by food inside the trailer. Black bears have an exceptionally keen sense of smell and can detect food from long distances.

Even though the bear did not attack the man, Colorado Parks and Wildlife determined it had become a serious public safety threat. According to CPW spokeswoman Kara Van Hoose: Bears know when a person is inside. If a bear still forces its way in to obtain food despite a human being present, it has lost its normal fear of people and poses an unacceptable risk.

Because the bear: deliberately tore the trailer door off to gain entry, entered an occupied trailer, and successfully obtained human food, CPW followed its policy and captured and euthanized the bear.

Last week a bear knocked my trash can over and ripped up a couple bags of garbage. No more putting it out the night before.

Black bears seem to have your neighborhood figured out. If you all have the same trash day, they know when to make their raids.

My trash company shows up Tuesday, 7 am. I’m still hitting snooze at that time, so I put out the trash on Monday night.

Our neighbor behind us, and I, were both victims on the same Tuesday, a few weeks back. We both use the same trash company, but our neighbors to the left, right, and directly across the street, each use different companies, and have different trash days. It keeps the bears guessing.

The bear knocked over one of my two trash cans and dug half the trash out, spreading it all over the place. The bear was obviously after a big bag of oranges. One orange had developed mold, so I had tossed the whole bag. A tasty bear snack.
