Do I still have a job? Thread

Glowing Cloud
This is profoundly embarrassing, but right now I am wondering if I still have a job.

I have severe sleep apnea, which basically means that I have to struggle to breath while I sleep. I have about 65 mini arousals (points where I almost wake up) whenever I am asleep and my blood oxygen levels go into the toilet. I use a CPAP, but that does not prevent me from having periods of excessive, severe sleepiness during the day. I was seen nodding during a staff training meeting at the prison where I work and also while I was observing a therapy group. Late in March my supervisor pulled me from another therapy group I was observing and I was escorted off grounds to my car. They put a "stop order" on me and I was placed on paid leave (thank god!) while they "investigated" the situation. I have seen my own Dr and a specialist since then, had a sleep study, and have to schedule a second sleep study designed to rule out narcolepsy. The union says I can't be fired for having a medical condition. Despite all the tests and the ongoing medical evaluations, I am not yet "cleared" to go back to work. I am depressed and anxious and waiting for the other shoe to drop. I wish I could say that I was sitting here honing my guitar skills but I am not doing that either.

I think I am asking for mojo. I have to get off my ass and do something but I am not sure what (aside from lose a hundred pounds, but that won't happen overnight).

I can see where falling asleep on the job would be a bit more problematic as a prison guard than say, an office worker, but best of luck to you. I hope they can fix this.

Good luck, man.....

Tough spot to be in.

This may be a stupid question, but can you take caffeine pills or something during the day?
I guess your doctor probably already thought of that, though....

Mojo sent.

Mojo from here as well. When I worked in transportation the union would try to get someone with a health issue like that re-assigned to a job that could accomodate the disability. Hopefully your union will be active on your behalf.

Did you post this thread a couple of months ago, or did I have vision into the future?

Either way, good luck, sir. Maybe contact your higher ups to check in and also speak with your union rep and express your concern there.

I do take a medication for it, now, but it is not a miracle drug.

mojo.

I was a bit worried that I was developing sleep apnea a few months back but it seems to have passed.
