Living near the lake would be nice and not having to deal with a car would be swell. I could definitely see the appeal.
In my experience, depending on the neighbors, you might be able to do low volume small wattage practice sans phones—especially if you’re being noisy during business hours when people can generally be expected to deal with/suck it w/r/t the sounds of other humans existing. Shit…back in the bad old days I held and attended many a lower volume drummerless band practice/writing session in apartments and condos. Is it obnoxious? Sure. Can everyone go to hell? Yep.
If you need bigger and louder, by the hour practice rooms at somewhere like the Music Garage aren’t too expensive as a one-off if you’re splitting the bill.
It’s a little less scenic/central, but Andersonville and Edgewater might also figure into your calculus—depending on how interested you are in living in the center of the Vatican City of Chicagoland lesbianism. It’s definitely scruffier in Edgewater, so your mileage may vary if you want to live in the decadent lap of luxury vs. fend off hobos. And that whole smeary Lincoln Square-to-Andersonville sprawl-zone is increasingly a vibe when it comes to strollers and transplants and whatnot.
We occasionally daydream about wriggling out from under the sword of Damocles that is home maintenance, but condo boards and associations give us the ick. And we bought low in our little slice of paradise out in NW MAGAstan, so it’s hard to see selling and still having enough to stay in the city. Plus our commutes are in opposite directions. Which means for now we’re stuck out here amongst the pigs and firefighters. Though it does seem more mullets/mustaches/matcha/totebag types are becoming aware of the area as there sent skittering up Milwaukee Ave in search of cheaper rents.
