How did I get here?
I have an opportunity to pick one up stupid cheap. Played a LP through it yesterday, and got some great tones. The store employee who owns it put it up basically on consignment so that he could buy the used Excelsior they also have for sale - which I was eyeballing a couple of weeks ago...

Anyone hear of any issues with these, besides having the word "Crate" somewhere on them?

What year? They made VC20's as far back as the '80's, IIRC.

The VC's were never as tour-rugged and bulletproof as the Peavey Classic series, they were more prone to issues with jacks, switches, channel switching (on the larger models), heat buildup, and poor soldering over the years. BUT they did sound incredible — especially for a clean and "clean breakup" tones — IMHO, better than the Peavey and other similar priced amps.
 
Ive had a USA VC2110R from 93’ or so since new. Great little amp. I put new tubes in it for the first time abou 3 yrs ago. About a year ago it started making frying noises so I put it away. Took it to the amp doc about a week ago and for $50 he re soldered a bad input jack and touched up a few more iffy solder joints. Caps still looked pretty darn good. Anyway good as new, sounds terrific.

Not sure what era, but it's in really good shape. Has the black tolex and 10" speaker. Only issue I found was crackling when the gain pot was turned; probably just a bit dirty.

A friend gigs with one exclusively. It sounds fantastic.
 
I sold my Excelsior to put towards my McFeely. I don't regret doing so because I love the guitar, but that was a great fucking amp at $200. If I come across another one cheap I'mma snag it.
