Question: Cool Boss?

Have you ever had a really cool boss to work for? I've been fortunate enough to the have worked for some pretty cool people. I don't mean buddy-buddy kind of thing, but someone who is decent and/or easy to work for.

My current supervisor fit the above, but with an additional cool factor.
He plays guitar.
Well, he doesn't as much now that he had kids to take care of, but he even put out a few CD's in the past. One even had Jerry Gaskill (King's X) record all of the drum tracks. We occasionally talk music and guitars.

So yesterday, he asked if I could get him out of a bind by working Friday, which is a holiday for us but we need to support a small project in the UK. I agreed, and besides, it is double time. He then updated the holiday schedule for the next 12 months and now I won't have to work any other holidays! That's cool.

That's cool.

I've never really worked for a bad boss. My last one, though, was pretty cool, but when I gave my notice to jump to a competitor, it was like I shot his dog or something. My last day where I went to the office to turn in my inventory, everyone there, including his bosses, gave me a nice goodbye; he apparently was too butthurt to do the same, even though he was in the building

This post got me thinking about one of the coolest bosses I ever had.

He was at the first IT consulting firm that I ever worked at. He was a drummer and guitar player as well as an avid kayaker. He was born in Colorado but lived in Hawaii for 10 years. He spent time in Africa learning drums from some masters down there where they made their own djembes and cajons.

This post made me search for him on Facebook. He's got a new family in New Mexico and looks to be living the kind of bohemian lifestyle that he and his wife always dreamed of.

I've had some cool ones. I had a restaurant manager who I swear they based the character Chris Traeger from Parks and Recreation on. He was probably the best boss I've ever had, my current ones excluded. :embarrassed:

On the other hand, I had a boss once that made me with the sun would explode. She was the super-rare feminist stereotype that gives real feminists a bad name, and if I corrected her for doing something improperly shed launch into a tirade about how I don't respect women and try to file a report against me with the owner. This happened about five times and finally the owner pulled us in for a a sit-down. I calmly sat there while she threw the Angry Feminist Manifesto at me then replied, "I don't have a problem working for women or taking direction from women, I have a problem working with people that don't know what the FUCK they're doing." I then explained what she was doing wrong and more importantly, what she was doing in an unsanitary manner and offered to show the owner the correct way to do it. Feminazi was fired, I was promoted to manager, and I'm sure I'm on her voodoo list somewhere.

I never get too much one way or another with my bosses so I guess most have been pretty good, if they hadn't been I would have quit no doubt in short order.

My boss at my last employer has however become a close friend. I went to his wedding and his wife memorial  and we still get together as often as possible (his schedule is fuller than mine with kids and grandkids to visit)

Most of my bosses for the last few years have been pretty good. My company puts pretty high expectations on people in supervisory roles. They aren't perfect but there have been very few with whom I didn't feel I could be effective.

Every job that I have had that lasted longer than a month. The number 1 factor for me at work is the boss. If they are a douche, I walk. Life is too short to work for an asshat.

Yup had a few.

The headmaster when I worked out in Saudi was a really cool guy. Expats kind of have a general solidarity out there anyway as it's a pretty grim life but he was definitely someone I had a lot of respect for and would have had a pint with in another life.

My current boss was a buddy of mine years ago. He finished his assignment with the military and was job hunting so I sent him to talk to my dad, who was a project manager. Dad hired him, and he became his "right hand man." Years later he (my buddy) hired me. He's the best boss. He'll let you have it if you screw up, but he covers our asses and takes great care of us.

Hmm. I am my own boss. I am pretty cool I think, but my small business has its challenges. I may write a letter to myself about what I want to see as an employee of me. Might help clarify some changes to make. I am a bit burned out on my job right now.

I've found that the "coolest" bosses are usually people without any real power in the organization. They're happy to listen to you, take your complaints and suggestions seriously, and then pretty much do nothing about it because they haven't any real pull to get things done.

Which isn't to imply that bosses without power are always cool. They can sometimes be the biggest asshats you'll ever meet in your life, simply because they have to take their frustrations out on someone.

I've had a few cool bosses.

Probably the most notable was the one that threatened to dock my pay if I didn't get some work done on my Charger restoration project.
We didn't work in a restoration shop either.

Of course, he was kidding, but I think if he could have, he would have.

Worked for two fellas in a coffee/public house. Good friends then and now, years after the place closed, and we jam once and a while.

Current Chef at work has had a pretty long run as a chef and has been executive chef at a number of very high end/fancy/expensive restaurants. He's a bit burnt out at this point. I get along really well with him in comparison to everyone else.

All the bosses at my current company are uber cool. the IT manager that hired me was a great guy (retired now). My current boss is VP is is also very cool. Mrs D, OTOH< works for a terrible boss. She makes the entire office environment toxic but they pay too much for her to quit. Luckily her bosas should retire in a year or two.

I have had one really cool boss. We ended up partying together quite a bit and went snowboarding a few times. He acted more like a cool older brother than an employer.

My last boss was pretty cool. We'd talk music all the time and he'd crank up 90's stuff on his PC when it was the weekend and there were just a few of us working.
