Consumerism Jam: What Stuff Do You Spend Extra On?

Beer. I was spending a lot on books, not buying rare first editions or anything, I just bought a lot of books. I don't have as much free time to read anymore so I've cut back on that. Beer is the only thing that I really splurge on for myself.
 
The only bespoke items I own are the ones Ive made myself. Conversely, I’ve learned over the years that when you buy the cheapest available option, you often get what you pay for.
 
Bike tires and clothing.
Ink is an area where you should never be concerned with the price, only the quality and artistry.

Right now.....nothing.

I'm in full on mode to pay off all our consumer debt. Marry that with me embracing minimalism, and I'm buying the minimum to get by right now. Probably my best answer will be - shoes. I don't buy any more than the minimum I generally need, but I don't think I own any shoes that cost less than $125.00 a pair except sandals. Even those are Teva or Sanuks.

It's funny how people choose what to spend their money on. When I saw the $125 on shoes, I thought, that's crazy. I'm not sure I've ever spent that much on a pair of shoes. But for me, $250 on a reverb pedal that I am going to use in my basement with only a cat as a audience, sure why not? :grin:
 
I splurge on vacations. I will usually pick a nice hotel, and even upgrade to a better room at my destination.

I also tend to spend more on my car purchases. The last two cars I have owned are sports cars, which are generally more expensive to buy and maintain than your average sedan.

I also will spend extra on food. It's better to spend more on quality natural foods now, than on medical bills down the road.

Well - I'm a runner. Since I started running I have invested in top shelf shoes and I have avoided foot/knee/hip injuries. Granted, I was sponsered by Brooks for three years so I got my shoes for free. But it hammered into me how important great shoes are when you spend a lot of time on your feet.

Some of the red lines are worth money no matter what condition. It really depends on the model and the colour.
 
One thing I believe that you should always spend the most on (relative to your budget) is suits. Always buy the best suit you can afford. And get it altered to fit you.

Absolutely cheap H&M suits or unstructured off the rack looks are awful on anyone over 19. They look bad on teenagers too, but who the fuck cares about what teens look like.

If you don’t wear a suit every day, make the suit you do wear count extra. Because you’re only putting it on when you have reason to look good. Have someone measure you and fit you.

Don’t buy something that looks like a bad rental when you wear it.

I’m currently bringing my talents to the garment care industry, and there is NO UPSIDE long term to cheaping out in material or construction when it comes to clothes.

Suits really are a get what you pay for item...vs. casual wear and sports wear where you’re often paying for brand recognition or store upcharge. A cheap suit is going to be substantially worse than a suit that costs $100 more. It won’t hold up to dry cleaning. It won’t hold a press. It will drape and hang weird. The “hand” on the fabric will wear weirdly and shine.

And tailors are necessary. Every once in a while you’ll put on a jacket and it will fit like a glove...and if that happens, buy that suit. But almost every suit will require some fitting.

Did ChuckyB hijack Peen Simmons brain....will the real Peen Simmons stand and be counted....suits...really, really Peen? I've only worn suits three times since like 1979 and that was for funerals. WTF buys suits :mad:

Funerals. Weddings. Fancy outings. Meetings where you cannot look like you fell off the back of a turnip truck. I don’t wear a suit every day like I used to, but it comes up.

The only reason I wore a suit at a Funeral was because i was a pall bearer. Actually it was two funerals and 1 wedding. The wedding i rented on and now my suit doesn't even fit. none of these occasions do i need a tailor. I can use a couple of pins or just look like a dude who rented a suit. I'm fine with that.

when I'm at a funeral it's not about me so i don't think anyone is judging and if they are...I really don't care

If I'm at a wedding , unless I'm the one getting married then again...it's not about me so I really don't care
