Concert Report: Flaming Lips and the Claypool Lennon Delirium

Saw a double bill last night at Port Chester's beautiful Capitol Theater. The Claypool Lennon Delirium is Les Claypool and Sean Lennon's super psychedelic thing and they were fantastic. Sean Lennon is a surprisingly good guitar player, he played what looked like a Bilt or Fano offset-type guitar the whole night and it sounded really thick. And Les Claypool makes me want to throw my basses in the trash. They played three covers that made me totally flip - "Astronomy Domine", "The Court of the Crimson King", and "Tomorrow Never Knows" sung by Sean. That last one was a trip.

The Flaming Lips were the Flaming Lips - I've seen them I guess six or seven times at this point and as usual they put on a crazy show with balloons, confetti cannons, costumes, inflatable robots, lasers, etc. and a great set list that included some of my favorites. They only played one tune from the new "King's Mouth" album, they focused more on Soft Bulletin / Yoshimi material with a few other "hits" thrown in. Steven's talk box failed on one song and they had to start the song over (I think they were filming the show).

The Lips were no surprise but the Claypool Lennon thing really blew me away. I need to order their record.

I remember feeling the same way when I saw Lennon's band (Ghost of the Saber Tooth Tiger) open for Beck. They guy can play, he was far better than I expected.
 
I want to see Lennon/Claypool so bad. I stumbled across them a few months ago looking for Primus stuff and fell in love.

I saw them on their inaugural tour, and that was my take away as well. He's not very animated, but can certainly play. It's always nice when you go to a show not expecting too much then come away being really impressed.

Was his offset guitar a green sparkle finish? That's what he played when I saw them. Glad you enjoyed it. :thu:

Edit: Went back through my photos to find it. The show was in 2016. Wow, doesn't seem that long ago.

Yes it was green and sparkly. Blue green maybe under the lights.

I have never heard The Flaming Lips, but they had an article about them in Yahoo yesterday. Apparantly they played at "The Peach Pitt", on an episode of Beverly Hills 90210 back in the day. My girlfriend is excited about the reboot of the show which premiers tomorrow. Can it ever be the same without Dylan? I mean, I have never seen the show.

Not saying you're not on top of things, but they ... uh, have won Grammies and stuff.

So, you're not on top of things.
 
Did they beat out Jethro Tull? I'm not really a give credit because a band won an award guy. But you are right. Im a recluse. I fear change . That said, they very well may be good. I will investigate with my ears. I'm not really into these bands at the Grammies anyhow. I do like Lady Gaga though. She really sings and has a real band.

The big deal you missed was their 1999 release, The Soft Bulletin. Songs off that and the next album have been in multiple movies and commercials. That’s pretty much the only album you need to catch up with.

They were the Pink Floyd of the 00s (good band to see high). In fact they did a whole tour covering Dark Side of the Moon (with a few nods to The Wizard of Oz) around 2010 (??). I saw it at Hollywood Forever cemetery (a venue you should not miss out on during the summer).

And they’re not heavy metal, so they never went against Tull in the Grammies.

I dont smoke anymore. I still love Pink Floyd. They had five genius albums. When I was 16, a buddy and I went to see The Dark Side Of The Moon lazer light show at the Griffith Observatory. Note to self, dont lock your homemade bong on the center console of your moms car with the tunes blaring, and the interior light on. You may find yourself deciding which window is cheapest to break. You also may have to come up with some real BS to tell your parents. Good times. I literally peed my pants the next morning when my dad hollered for me. There was broken glass all over the car that I didnt pick up, a couple of beer bottle caps on the floor, and the drivers seat was in the severe recline mode. "What the hell were you doing? Sleeping?"

Actually, the Flaming Lips have many, many albums that are deeply moving, artistically significant, and tremendously enjoyable.

Transmissions From the Satellite Heart
Clouds Taste Metallic
Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots
Hit To Death In The Future Head

.... these are wonderful albums, in the true sense of that sadly dated concept.
