Capo question...

I asked this in the other Capo thread but wanted to ask it specifically here.

For you capo users where do you put it, right behind the fret, on the fret, in the middle between 2 frets?

If I put it in the middle or anywhere not very close to the fret (practically on top) it really messes up the tuning of the guitar. I can tune it at that point but it's a pain and then when I take the capo off it's even more out of tune.

Maybe it's a crappy capo (it's new... spring loaded black one, just squeeze and put on the neck, not adjustable though).

You put it DIRECTLY behind the fret with just enough tension to fret the strings...if you put it ON the fret it acts as a mute, and putting it between the frets pulls the tuning sharp...

I just recently learned that you should put it right on the fret. It does not act as a mute, and it totally prevents tuning issues.
Try it--it woiks!

I put mine just behind the fret. I found that the Keyser spring-loaded capo didn't work as well for me as the Shubb does.

I'm tellin' ya, I've been doing the behind-the-fret thing for decades. Always resulted in at least a touch of tuning weirdness.
Directly on top of the fret works wonders.

I just tried it with my Shubb capo on the 12-string and a number of strings were buzzy or muted. I'll stick with what I've done for 40+ years since it works for me. Glad that works out for you, though.

I place mine at the bad edge of the fret. If it's pushing the strings done to the fretboard, you're going to go sharp.

A 12-stirng adds a caveat to this, the wound strings will keep the capo from reaching the harmonic strings.

As close to the fret as you can go without touching it. That's another reason I like my NS Trigger, since I can dial in tension. Kysers clamp too damn hard.
