Not for me, for Mum. She likes it a lot and I know NOTHING about it... any car guys want to help me out?

I'd look closer at the Mazda. While I'm not personally a fan there are several guys on the forum that have them and love them.
I can also get a "Friends and family" deal on a new Hyundai for you which can be serveral thousand dollars off a new car depending on current rebates and whatnot but it's a PITA to get the dealer to not be an asshole. Ask @reverend1 - we tried to get him a car and his local dealer was such an asshole he went to the VW dealer next door and bought a car. If it works out it can be a pretty sweet deal, though.
 
My wife has a Mazda 3 and loves it. I have to admit that when we went up to Mendocino and Fort Bragg last summer, it was FUN driving that little thing on those twisty coast range mountain roads. It really handles like a champ.
 
I have a 2010 Mazda3 and it's an excellent car...

Can tell you that my experience with recent GM products is not good...
 
She tried really hard to find a used Element (like she used to have) but the one she was going to buy sold on her way to check it out and the other had a bad Carfax. She liked the Scion xB (2015) but the mileage isn't as good as the older version and she likes the way the Mazda drives best. She really liked the hauling capabilities and the low mileage of the Buick, but said the interior felt cheap and "It's a Buick..."

I think she's secretly already made up her mind to get the Mazda, but is just making sure she's not making a bad decision.
 
My old boss had one of those new Buicks.
It was a very nice car, but I agree, the Mazda3 is going to end up being more reliable.
Why? Because it's a Buick........
 
I too am a mazda 3 owner. I love my 2012 mazdaspeed3. I'd take the mazda over the buick any day. I don't really know much about the buick, other than my lab tech had one that was always at the dealer getting stuff fixed. It was a minivan/SUV of some sort. I think my tech spent more time driving the loaner chevy hatchback than her Buick.

Okay, so mum's getting her Mazda tonite. Thanks for the confirmation guys. She got a nice discount through my stepdads work and some additional loyalty incentives since he has two Mazdas too.

Elements are a bear to try and swing a deal on. Out of production and clean examples are in huge demand. Good ones hardly last long on the market.

Between the Buick and the Mazda 3, fuel economy is probably neck and neck except the Mazda will be able to get out of it's own way and actually be pleasant to drive. Reliability is in favor of the Mazda but then again when you're buying used, the prior owner behavior and maintenance habits are critical. I think your Mom made a good choice going w the Mazda because unless there's something specific about the Buick that she wants, it really doesn't have an edge anywhere except maybe visibility and overall interior cubic foot of storage space....neither of which would compel me to go with the Buick.
 
I like the newer Buick cars although I always wonder why someone would buy a new one over a new Chevrolet. A Buick Verano is a rebadged Chevy Cruze, maybe a bit more rear seat room, but higher $$$ and less MPG. The LaCrosse is a rebadged Malibu, again for much more $$$ and the Malibu is a better car.

I see that the Buick Encore uses the same 1.4L turbo engine that the Cruze uses. So far my Cruze has been pretty decent, it's quiet inside and gets pretty good mpg, 34.4 overall on a trip to Cleveland back in April, and 35 even on my August trip to Cleveland, and that includes both highway and city.

I would guess that the Encore, being a bit bigger, less slippery, wouldn't get the same figures though. So the Mazda wins there.

Me personally I would take the Mazda. But I'm not a big fan of CUV/SUV's

And both are a rebadged Opel Astra. The big three are global companies and it makes sense to leverage an existing model across different markets. Besides positioning the cars on spec, they can also appeal to brand loyalty. At least in this case, it is all in the family unlike say when Honda resold Isuzu SUVs while they designed their own or VW rebranding a Chrysler minivan or Chevy rebranding Suzukis.
