I tried Dickel's Cascade Hollow sour mash the other night. I was amazed. It sells for less than $20 a bottle. It was very, very smooth. When I think of sour mash, I think of Jack Daniels. JD is piss compared to Dickel's. It's good stuff. I'm going to pick up a bottle.

Yeah, the whole Dickel line is pretty solid and the prices are nice.

Speaking of inexpensive whiskey, I picked up a bottle of that Trader Joe's Bourbon the other day for a measly $14. (before soul-crushing WA liquor taxes) REALLY nice for the price. It is rumored to be Buffalo Trace in some form. I don't drink enough BT to be too sure, but whatever it is, it's probably worth twice the price.

Since the privatization of liquor sales in WA, yep. I assume it varies from state to state. Some of it various name brands and some of it TJ's branded, which just means someone else made it and they bought it at a discount and slapped a label on it. People do a lot of guessing and whispering about what is made by who.

And yes you should try Rittenhouse 100 rye. I like it better than a lot of stuff that's much more expensive.

I don't think I've had the red label, but the white label is fantastic. I still haven't tried the bottle of their rye that I got last week....
 
The girlfriend got me another bottle of Booker's for valentine's day... I'm getting spoiled on that fine, fine shit.
 
I keep a bottle of Dickel around just so I can ask people if they'd like a Trickle of my Dickel. I got that from someone here or on HC. Props to whoever it was. All I ever get is eyerolls or "Huh? ::confused:", but I still laugh every time.

After a few glasses of Blanton's over the last few weeks, I like it. It tastes pretty damn good.

After tasting a good dozen bourbons, I'm getting a good "feel" for what I like now. I need to revisit Buffalo Trace now. :grin:

My favorite bourbons in order are Angel's Envy, Four Roses Small Batch, Booker's, and Blanton's. I still need to try some others like Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel, Basil Hayden's, and maybe some Baker's.

I bought a bottle of Lexington today. It's really nice. It would be nicer if the cork didn't break as I was attempting to remove it from the bottle. I had to use a corkscrew. And of course I don't have another cork that will fit it. So I had to resort to plastic wrap and a rubber band to seal the bottle. I guess I'll be finishing that bottle off first.

$33 is a good price. I was going to get a bottle of Buffalo Trace, but I can get that near the house. The jumbo sized store near work has the harder to get stuff.

The color reminds me of the scene in Mister Roberts where they create a bottle of red label scotch for Ensign Pulver. When it's tasting time, William Powell as the doctor takes the bottle saying, "This calls for a medical opinion".

This is some really good bourbon. There is plenty going on with the various tastes. It is something I'll likely make sure I have on hand.
 
What's the difference between bourbon & whiskey? Or is there one?

I ask because yesterday in the grocery store I saw a specialty bottle of BBQ sauce made in Michigan, and it claimed to have genuine Michigan bourbon from the Grand Traverse Distillery.

I went to the Grand Traverse Distillery web site, and they have a whiskey:

but no mention of bourbon, unless it's one and the same :shrug:

Either way, I wonder if it's any good?
